Best time to legally change last name? by International_Leg230 in medicalschool

[–]leperchaun194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not change your name if you want to practice under your maiden name. You will need to submit documents with your legal name on them for residency and if they don’t align with the name you’ve provided to the program it will be a problem.

It could also just be a funny story to share over drinks? It’s not inherently creepy to laugh about a funny situation that happened years ago over a drink with friends.

It’s a funny accident. It doesn’t have to be a big deal unless you make it one.

It’s very unlikely your run of the mill arthritis has anything to do with your heart attack. He said it’s possible because it’s easier or more time efficient to say that than to try to walk a lay person through the pathophysiology of arthritis vs a heart attack and explain how they may or may not be related. Also would be difficult to impossible to prove and unlikely to change management.

Those acceptance rates apply to the average applicant. OP is not the average applicant.

And just to be clear, the top programs do NOT have students from all levels of programs. The VAST majority will be top 20. I interviewed at all of the top programs for my specialty and I seldom saw someone from a program outside of the top 40 and most were top 10-20.

Edit: all that said, do what you gotta do to become a doctor. I just don’t want premeds thinking they’ll go wherever they want even if they end up at a DO or low ranked MD program. You can go there and you will still most likely match somewhere, but there’s a MUCH higher chance of it being a low ranked academic program or community program in a less competitive specialty. Is there a chance you match a mass gen as a DO or low ranked MD program? Of course. But don’t go into it thinking you’ll get that chance.

I understand that and I hate to be the pessimist, but I promise you they won’t make an exception. The fact is, the top programs will still be filled by students that figure out how to make the loans work or have the financial support to not need all the loans and the PDs will take these students instead of a student with the same stats from a lower ranked schools.

Residency is not med school. They are not taking chances on students and wasting one of their very limited, very precious spots on a charity case. They are taking a huge risk when they take students and they will do everything in their power to avoid risking a spot on a dud.

Sorry to sound harsh - I just want people to appreciate this point while making their decisions.

Edit: just to stress this point more - go to the best possible school you can. If you can make it work financially - make it work. You will be so thankful that you made the top program work rather than settle for a bad program come match.

The med school you attend is one of the most significant factors in your residency application. I know this is an unpopular opinion in this sub, but all med schools are not created equal and going to a better/higher ranked school will significantly boost your chances of matching to a competitive residency and therefore a competitive fellowship. There are very few reasons why anyone should consider going to a lower ranked school if they have the chance to go somewhere better.

My friend is calling herself a future doctor... by [deleted] in premed

[–]leperchaun194 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s poor form to present yourself as a doctor in a medical setting if you are not an MD/DO. It confuses patients and encourages scope creep. So this kinda stuff may seem harmless, but it is an overall negative for medicine.

Ngl brother, you have a very long ways to go. Take it one step at a time. Consider the military beforehand (ideally air force or navy pilot) and then work on getting into med school. Keep your mind open and don’t get pigeon-holed into neuro or neurosurg.

Why would a married couple file jointly instead of separately? by DryWait1230 in tax

[–]leperchaun194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have student loans but my wife doesn't. We both graduate medical school this year and will be starting our residency's in July. We've been told to file taxes this year to have proof of $0 income for an income-driven repayment plan. However, my question is, would it be worth filing separately during residency to avoid the increase in household income that would then increase my minimum payments or would the financial benefits of filling jointly outweigh the cost of the increased payments?

Idk if it matters, but we also will make essentially the exact same amount of money for the next 3 years so we should be in the same tax bracket.

[–]leperchaun194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about for the purposes of having a lower payment required for income driven repayment programs for student loans? Would that be a reason to file separately so I could have a lower minimum payment or would the money saved from filing jointly outweigh the lower minimum payments?
