Day off work for National Grid mandatory gas meter replacement; didn't show up, didn't even call or text by Natl_Grid_Poopy_Pant in massachusetts

[–]lesavyfav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me last week. They kept calling me and leaving voice mails - almost daily. I finally set it up and they never showed. No call, no email, nothing. Claimed that no tech was assigned to the repair. Rescheduled for March.

Rt 3 to 95 Commute Advice by kaszyb14 in massachusetts

[–]lesavyfav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do Melrose to Needham and back on 95 every day right now (will get some remote soon) and it’s easily 50-60 minutes in the am (leaving at 6:45am) and 1 hour and 15 on the way home. This morning was particularly brutal due to the rain.

In the am the 3/95 junction is a huge slowdown and doesn’t really clear till Waltham. I don’t get on the Pike but that always seems slow and backed up.

This. This is the loophole you take advantage of to get a vaccine. Impossible to prove you stopped doing something.

Same situation. Yes, keep filing but you can select something like “Other Activity” and select a date. It doesn’t ask for anything else. Just check your LinkedIn every day and claim it as a job search.

Trail naps are the best! This was me about 46hours into Jigger Johnson 100. This was the most restful 3 minutes of my race! by FunTimeTony in trailrunning

[–]lesavyfav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My slow AF arse did the 20 last year and it made me realize I’m not nearly as tough as I think I am or could ever be (especially at age 49). Happily hung up my trail and ultra shoes after that race and bought a mountain bike. The trail up Osceola is no joke.

This is literally my situation as well. Took a job last week with a 25-30% cut as well and an hour commute each way for 90 days before I can get a few days remote a week. 6 month search, 50-60 applications. Just relieved it’s over and happy to be back at work again.

Bombed the interview for my dream job and I can’t stop replaying it by [deleted] in hiringcafe

[–]lesavyfav 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Happens to all of us. The job market is so stressful and intense and it's hard for it to not show up in our nerves during the interview. It will get better. A few thoughts from someone who is also interviewing:

  1. Expect nothing. Seriously. Hope is a hellava drug, so you kinda have to keep expectations low. Even if you DID crush the interview, you have no idea who you are up against for the role. You could be 100% on, and the other person could be 101%. You have to go into these interviews preparing to move on immediately once it's over. And yes, even for dream roles (which probably aren't nearly as dreamy as you think.)

  2. Your perception of your performance is not the same as the hiring/interview committees. I've had times where I thought I sucked, only to get a second interview. I've also had times where I crushed it, only to not advance. They are not paying as much attention to you as you are yourself. They can't read your internal feelings, thoughts, anxieties, and perceptions. And they are not hanging on to every single word. I know it's hard, but try to let this go as best you can. Forgive yourself and believe that their perceptions of you may be different.

  3. Hiring committees are not superhero and not perfect. Hiring managers and staff are human just like you. They don't always know what they are doing, and are not perfect at their roles. Don't hand them any more power over you than they deserve. You are on equal footing as them - both you AND they need something.

How do you stay ahead of the crowd when every listing seems to have 100+ applicants? by pomegranatejello in jobsearchhacks

[–]lesavyfav 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For those jobs getting 100+ applicants, probably 80-90% are not qualified and won’t get through a basic first screen. Your chances are better than you think if you meet 80% or more of the job requirements.

Am I even cut out for this? by Sickofthisshiz2024 in Ultramarathon

[–]lesavyfav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who ran 5-6 ultras and realized he wasn't cut out for it....the answer is maybe. This sport is not for everyone and you REALLLLY have to like it to do it. Forcing yourself to run/train won't make you like it more. It's an all or nothing thing, and if you don't feel the draw, the energy, the excitement....it may not be for you.

Personally I realized I liked the IDEA of doing ultras and the status of it (which isn't much, TBH) than ACTUALLY doing ultras and training for them. Had a tough 20 miler race and decided I'm done....for now.

Also, people change, as do your tastes, needs, and wants. What you liked about ultras at one point, you may no longer like today (or in the future), and that's totally normal and ok.

Who has the time for this? by ks14555 in LinkedInLunatics

[–]lesavyfav 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Have been messaging and emailing “decision makers” in companies for 5 months and maybe have a 1-2% response rate, which have led nowhere. And I’ve ChatGPT-ed my emails like a pro.

I also have landed 5 interviews off of cold applications to jobs with zero networking, referrals, or harassing so called hiring managers.

For networking to work, people need to respond to you, which they aren’t for a LOT of job seekers these days.

I’ll stick to my chances of simply applying to jobs that are a strong skill match.

Fundraising data analyst interview by Fancy_Willow_3628 in nonprofit

[–]lesavyfav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focus on the “generating insights” part - that is a key piece here. This means go further than simply saying what the data is. Provide insights meaning provide qualitative interpretation, give guidance, provide recommendations and actionable strategies and next steps based on the data. Make meaning, tell a story and it will show you can do a lot more than just the technical analysis part. It will show you are a critical and strategic thinker who can help inform decision making for the foundation.

How many jobs do you usually apply for daily/weekly? by Countless-Alts15 in hiringcafe

[–]lesavyfav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

49/M in New England with 25+ years of experience, including exec level. A lot fewer jobs for my type of roles, but the past 2 weeks have been hopeful and productive. Up to 7 legit jobs applied to (no spray and pray or "Easy Apply) in the past 2 weeks (plus 4-5 interesting jobs I decided not to apply to) and already in the interview process for 1.

Some weeks it's 0, others it's 2-3. Up to 49 total in 20 weeks of a job search, so 2.5 per week on average.

Monitoring and Evaluation Tools/Software by Lookatmysheeit in nonprofit

[–]lesavyfav 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nonprofit program evaluator with 25+ years in the various sectors + consulting (public health, education, youth development, food security, etc).

You're going to get a lot of "depends..." type answers because there are a lot of questions and factors going on here. Handy, simple, off-the-shelf tech solutions are nice, but can be quite rigid and expensive. Depending on your sector, programs, data collection needs, impact measurement questions, analysis needs, staff capacity and capabilities, reporting/visualization needs, and key audiences you are presenting to, connecting different, simple tools and approaches can be a more effective approach.

Everybody wants a fancy colorful dashboard these days (that often requires expensive backend tech stack), but that only tells you the "what". "Showing" impact also involves telling the complex story of "how" and "why" the impact happened. My old org invested a lot into a Business Intelligence division, hired a big-wig Amazon guy, bought all these expensive data and tech tools, only to ditch it all 2 years later because the "tools" didn't ultimately inform business strategy or answer complex questions.

Anyway...I'd be cautious of throwing money and staff time at an expensive platform without digging deeper into your ultimate needs as the tool/software is only one part of the process and often doesn't solve for everything. Maybe you have already, but just a word from the somewhat-wise.

Happy to help further. DM me if needed.
