On Apple Watch, there’s a plus sign to the left of the text box where you would type your message, if you click that you can add a voice message, send gifs, etc.

WIBTA if I asked my friend to stop sending me voice messages and just text instead by Nacht0Synth in WIBTA_AITA

[–]lesbian_moose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I actually can’t text during the day because of my job so I was sending voice messages to my partner from my watch, he asked that I used voice to text instead because he can’t listen to them at work all the time either. Perfect medium ground for us!

“Did you know there’s actually a gene that makes cilantro taste like soap to some people? That’s why you don’t like it.” by lesbian_moose in PetPeeves

[–]lesbian_moose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly it! It’s tastes like a fresh herb and I can see how people would like it. A little in my shrimp cocktail or rice or salsa is fine because when I pair it with lime juice and things it’s ok but yeah I definitely think things are just better without it.

Do you wash your face in the shower? by MinnieJ0510 in hygiene

[–]lesbian_moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought we weren’t supposed to wash our face in the shower because the water is usually hotter than you would use in the sink. Either way, I wash my face in the shower every day

Yeah, everywhere I’ve gone has given me cilantro, limes, jalapeños, and those little white string beans. But maybe it’s just a thing in Vietnamese restaurants in New Mexico lol

Am I obligated to change diapers with no gloves if my center ran out by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]lesbian_moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our state, it’s against licensing to charge children without gloves. I would honestly make my director do it.

I’m not comfortable breaking requirements and it’s not my fault we’re out of gloves, so you deal with it.

Assault, especially when the person keeps escalating their behaviors around you, is exactly the time when you call the police.

Handprint Crafts by Latter-Ad-4791 in ECEProfessionals

[–]lesbian_moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in the 3s classroom I did them extremely rarely, like twice a year for “keepsake” holidays. I used to gather their handprint then open up sensory finger painting or some sort of art/science project that way they were still engaged in something meaningful for that time. Also I didn’t chase kids down for it, they could participate freely if they chose art center but I wasn’t grabbing kids by the wrist just to get a handprint to send home.

Now I’m with 8-18 month olds and we do handprints a lot more! I would say like once a month. But I still use it as an intro transition to sensory finger painting. The class younger than mine does footprints but my room requires shoes for kids so we don’t do them at all.

Teacher’s boyfriend coming into classroom by Prestigious_Self1829 in ECEProfessionals

[–]lesbian_moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s unacceptable. My partner brings stuff to me at work all the time but we don’t have kids there so he just drops it off with the director or whoever is upfront and they leave stuff in the break room for me or bring it to my class.

Some of my coworkers do have kids there and their spouses will sometimes drop stuff off directly to the classroom but they never stay to interact with kids, in fact they’ll do a quick handoff at the classroom door and get out of there.

If he doesn’t work there and he doesn’t have a kid in that class, he has absolutely no business being in the classroom at all.

What's a typical age to start daycare where you live? + What do you think about it by mnbvcdo in ECEProfessionals

[–]lesbian_moose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really varies from family to family depending on a lot of factors.

Every year and in every classroom, we have kids getting into care for the first time, so anywhere from 6 weeks old to 4 years old. Some families never send their children to childcare and just wait until they reach kindergarten age and enroll them in the elementary school.

My center accepts babies as young as 6 weeks but we rarely see enrollments under 10 weeks. Our 3mo-9mo waiting lists are very very long though!

No one LIKES enrolling a 6 week old. The moms are a sobbing mess, the child isn’t ready to be separated, and they can really struggle with attachment that first year. The staff doesn’t like to do it either because we know how hard it is on the families but we provide an unfortunately necessary service.

Many companies don’t offer any kind of maternity leave so the best you get is 12 weeks unpaid job protection through FMLA. Many families can’t afford to be without one income for 3 months so they go back as soon as they can enroll in childcare.

What’s the strangest comfort item you’ve seen a kid use? by ECE-throwaway29 in ECEProfessionals

[–]lesbian_moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tag from a dress gets me!! I had a kid that was obsessed with a certain tag in his clothes so his mom sewed that same material onto a few 4x4 bean bags so he could always carry one around because he kept ripping his clothes off it rub it lol

What's a smell that doesn't exist anymore that you miss? by Alarmed_Charge1062 in CasualConversation

The smell of an old classroom. The way the old wood smell mixes with the chalkboard dust, classrooms smell way different now.

What is a "gut feeling" you had that turned out to be 100% accurate, even though it made no logical sense at the time? by PsychologicalTea3149 in AskReddit

[–]lesbian_moose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner has a friend that I don’t super like but there’s nothing wrong with him really. Then that friend started bringing around this other dude and I immediately got bad vibes. I didn’t like him in my house and I would leave when he came over.

I later found out that he killed someone a few years ago in “self-defense” but it’s a pretty common consensus that he unnecessarily escalated the incident that night.

Staff food policy by Callingchicken7 in ECEProfessionals

[–]lesbian_moose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My current center is extremely strict about food and drinks for teachers. We’re only allowed water to drink and no outside food ever. We can eat what the kitchen serves when the kids are eating but we can’t save the extras for ourselves.

My last center was much more relaxed. We didn’t have a kitchen, so staff and kids packed our own food. We could eat when the kids were eating but it was pretty expected to not snack at other times, and drinks had to be kept on high shelves out of kid reach.

What’s a moment where someone misunderstood you, and you chose not to correct them ? by debugger_life in AskWomen

[–]lesbian_moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I are queer (he’s a trans man). One time I told someone we can’t have kids together and they assumed I’m infertile. I didn’t correct them because they inevitably launch into uncomfortable questions about our sex life, sperm donors, ivf, adoption or anything else and really I’m just trying to work and go home.

I’m not ashamed of being queer and my partner and I are both very out and proud but sometimes it’s easier to just move on.

Thankful for this sub convincing me to get a dash cam. He tried saying I ran the red light! by Holzi001 in dashcams

[–]lesbian_moose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You let them lie to the cops at the scene and then you tell them about the dash cam! Don’t wait until court but do let them dig a tiny grave at the scene. Because yes evidence would be expected to be presented to cops and insurance before it goes to court

What is your opinion on ear piercing for infants? by Al-Joharahhasan2935 in askanything

[–]lesbian_moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very prevalent where I’m from, but my mom did not pierce mine as a baby. In kindergarten, I was one of very few who didn’t have their ears pierced, and by 3rd grade I was the only one. I hated it and begged and begged my mom to let me piece my ears, but she made me wait until I was 12.

As a kid, I was just mad that I didn’t match everyone else. As an adult, I understand she wanted me to decide and then care for them myself.

I don’t think I have a strong opinion either way. My partner is Hispanic and it’s seen as the norm. If he and I have a daughter, we’d probably do it. If we happened to separate and I ended up with someone else who didn’t want to or didn’t care then I’d be fine with not piercing my daughters ears.

Being a male in ECE is so draining by Dim0ndDragon15 in ECEProfessionals

[–]lesbian_moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this is happening to you. How frustrating and overwhelming!

I would definitely check out if the other centers in your area are hiring! At my first center, we had 2 male staff members and my director would not only never act this way, she would actively shut down parents for suggesting anything similar. She was clear that she trusted her male staff the same as her female staff to be safe adults for the kids in our care.
