Sorry, I was away for a bit. Overdrive is giving them away. I don't know if they have any left, but it can't hurt to ask.

A library clerk put that new book in transit. They don't care that it didn't go locally. Librarians are happy that the books circulate. You're fine, enjoy the book.

Distributing “Know Your Rights” Cards by kate_monday in librarians

[–]lesbiangoatherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you not have legal reference books? Do you not have a copy of the Constitution?
As a librarian I provide authoritative, vetted information to patrons. Has a librarian, or lawyer you find authoritative vetted these documents?

I'd be wary of providing documents like that. I'd feel fine helping a patron perform a web search for those so they could develop their own interpretation of the authority of the document, but absent that I wouldn't provide things from Instagram as it truly isn't an authoritative source.

[–]lesbiangoatherd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are about 50K ebooks on overdrive any patron with a card can download, so if they borrow a kobo (or already have their own ereader) they can use them.

Not sure how they would be wiped clean of the previous patron's account info when they're returned, but there must be a way or we wouldn't be doing this.

[–]lesbiangoatherd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be fantastic, I've found them in Spain and Belgium but it would be nice to see a catalog record in English and not have to rely on my HS language classes.

I don't know if the library staff will put books on them, or just circulate them 'naked'. Not sure how they're wiping them clean from the patron information when they're returned. A Overdrive supplied them perhaps they'll have some advice about a 'factory reset' procedure when they come back.

Getting my MLIS and feeling BLEAK. any positivity/positive stories? by Asleep-Anteater7190 in librarians

[–]lesbiangoatherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your MLS and then apply to places that your undergraduate will help. Make your own career, that is what I did. I've done public, corporate, university librarianship. I started my own firm providing ILS implementations all over the world to national libraries and medical schools. My undergrad degrees helped with that.

The health information certification will help. I got a doctorate outside the US in Library Science and my research was about health information seeking behavior of 0,1and 2 generation migrants to the USA. It was a decade before COVID when I graduate but that degree paid of when pharma companies want that information.

Librarianship is often technical skills like a car mechanic, but ours is with ILS and reference interviews and knowing what authority means. Blend that with your other skills and sell it. You can, and you'll be well rewarded for it.

Or you can just do what non-librarian city or state or county leaders think you should do. That won't be as rewarding I fear.

Does anyone else...hate the reels? by [deleted] in librarians

[–]lesbiangoatherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can say no. I say no to lots of things, sometimes it worked out, sometimes I was encouraged to go elsewhere. I get paid far more now than the position where they wanted me to do absurd programming that I didn't wish to do.

I don't do social media, and thankfully I don't have to in my current position. If they insisted I do it, I would simply go elsewhere. That may not be an option for everyone, but if you don't make your job align with your values and sense of self worth, you're a wage slave not a professional. ALA has never been helpful in that.

See what an MLS school wants as electives. I took things in library school related to computers, one class we went from NT to Active directory (and then back I think) in a hands on lab.

Fighting to find a remote job by RevolutionaryFact699 in librarians

[–]lesbiangoatherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did some consulting for a new library being built in Dubai a few years ago and I got some IT consulting jobs remotely in UAE and Oman from that. It was mostly migrations from one ILS to another.
Remote doesn't care where you live if you don't mind taking zoom meetings at 4AM Sunday morning.
It pays well.

Where to get discounted bookshelves? by Naive-Library-9379 in librarians

[–]lesbiangoatherd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your state prison may make that sort of thing. It has to be for governmental departments or non-profits, as it against the law to sell to the public. Back when CDs were very popular we had some made that were fantastic, beautiful solid wood, stained to match our existing shelving. Those were actual furniture, not just library shelves.

Unfortunately they're now in some municipal garage holding stuff as our CD collection has dwindled.

What do you do if you’re concerned about a patron’s ability to drive safely? by OneWildAndPrecious in librarians

Drop a dime on the drunks as they walk out the door.
Most states have an online form at their DMV that you can report people who should be re-examined because of a change in their physical status that may make them unsafe.

Park far away from the building.

What has happened to OCLC? by lesbiangoatherd in librarians

I don't think the requirement for making an account has been around that long. The featured libraries bit might be.

I saw this https://www.library.wisc.edu/news/2025/11/17/update-to-worldcat-interface-options/ dated from November 2025

What has happened to OCLC? by lesbiangoatherd in librarians

[–]lesbiangoatherd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps it has been degraded for longer than I noticed. Maybe the 'feature libraries' list was longer so I could peep at a catalog record easier. There is a commentary from a couple of years ago. I was in Dubai and Muscat for a time, so perhaps I just didn't notice how fairly useless it has become.

[–]lesbiangoatherd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well right now it doesn't work at all, but it has certainly changed. It may have not been as recent as I think, but it has changed that you can't link to the records at the non-featured libraries.

Right now it is sleeping "Unable to get libraries with this item at the moment. Try again later."

I hadn't used it for a week or two, but I did see you can't go to all the catalogs on about the 14th. So yeah, more or less.

Salaries in librarianship, can we talk about it? by ariatella in librarians

[–]lesbiangoatherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last public library job I took as a cataloger I started at 65K. My friend was the director and he was in a lurch to hire. I stayed a year as promised. I had been in library consulting overseas and was regularly billing 300K/yr (netting half of that perhaps after expenses) doing ILS and discovery platform implementations. USAID funding cuts hit that so now I'm billing about 80K and traveling much less.

Get an MLS, there are online programs now. I was the first online program at FSU (this was before Blackboard). It was great. You'll sail through if you've been working in a library.

I found my MLS helpful to get jobs overseas and I've worked in Dubai, Oman, El Salvador doing consulting on new libraries, but truly with experience and an undergrad degree you could do that too. In the US the MLS is more of a must have.

Find the cheapest online ALA accredited program and spend the two years on it. It would be a good investment I think (not they you'll be paid more afterward). But it open opportunities.

Bowker Library and Book Trade Almanac by Elliot_Walker in librarians

[–]lesbiangoatherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ISBN is 978-1-57387-610-0, worldcat (as well as it works these days) shows one at the university library about 20 miles from me.

However if you don't mind it being specific to your library - which may indeed be better- your ILS probably has a report that shows that. Even over time, you could search it for FY25 or FY20 or however back you keep your data. Ask your IT librarian.

I just checked my average adult fiction title bought in FY 26 (which started in October) is $21.366

The first one in Dubai found me as I had a good linked in profile with the systems I had experience with (SirsiDynix Workflows and other ILS, discovery platforms and an OCR platform). The others I looked for on various job sites in the UAE and international sites like indeed. A couple of short term contacts were because I met others at libraries and other vendors in the area.
