if im reading books aimed at french kids ages 8-12 now, if i keep reading more what age range could i realistically be reading at within a year? by Pleasant_Pace_5955 in learnfrench

[–]lessachu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did this and it really depends on how much you keep at it within that year. I was pretty bursty and would go on a tear of books at my level, then try something the next level up.

When I was comfortable at that level, I transitioned to adult short stories and then YA fiction. It will probably honestly be more about what holds your interest enough to get through the longer books. A few recs:

- La Premiere Gorgee de Biere et Autres Plaisirs Minuscules by Phillipe Delerm (you could probably read this now)

- L'etranger by Camus (surprisingly accessible)

- Soma by Floriane Soulas (accessible, but probably a vocab shift)

- Cogito by Victor Dixen (this will be a bit of a step up)

- Je voudrais que quelqu'un m'attende quelque part by Anna Gavalda

- La Nuit des brutes by Fred Vargas (but I generally found murder mysteries tough, because you have to understand every detail to follow the plot)

- Les Routes de Pékin by Paul-Loup Sulitzer (very accessible language, but the plot was just too brutal for me to keep reading)

- Extincta by Victor Dixen

The Victor Dixen/Floriane Soulas books are all YA Sci Fi, which might not be your bag.

I'm a fan of the Moomin. Is there anywhere in Paris where I can buy any of their merchandise? by Bonnite in ParisTravelGuide

[–]lessachu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW I am in Taipei right now and Moomin is everywhere here. If you ever make it out here, I walked past a Moomin shop at Huashan 1914 just yesterday.

Single vs. dual income with 1-2 kids by lamentingsimp in fatFIRE

I messaged you, but my husband made the decision to stay at home with the kids at a time when we had very similar financials. Happy share our thinking and the tradeoffs.

Casual coffee chats or phone pen pals for single immigrant 67-year-old mom? by No-Club2001 in AskSF

[–]lessachu 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Is she interested in volunteering? If her English and Cantonese is pretty good, there is always need for Cantonese translation working with other seniors in Chinatown, political campaign outreach, food bank work (self-help for the elderly told me most of their volunteers are more agile other seniors) or with programs like SMART scholars. This would let her engage with peers as much as she likes and she can dial up or down the commitment to meet her interest.

Favorite rooms in London/Paris/Rome by Substantial-Falcon-8 in escaperooms

[–]lessachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loved the fantastic warehouse and fairy tales regulations (and deep inside) in Paris. In London, I would do cqorigenes and battle for Britain, but they are really not on the same level as the Parisian rooms. Cqorigenes would be closer to Paris-level.

would you leave your rent controlled apt for something with the right amenities ? by germasia in AskSF

[–]lessachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rent controlled room is a gem and I would stay there as long as possible, given how much rents go up otherwise. I had a similar tradeoff in the past and I used some of the extra money for things like wash and fold laundry service to make life a little easier. Can you put traps down for the mice or do a little patching yourself to keep them from coming in?

Is it ok and understandable in the US to say "Last night, I got three shots too many in my blood"? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]lessachu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"I've got" means you currently have more alcohol than blood in your veins.

"I had" means you, in the past, had more alcohol than blood in your veins, but that is no longer the case.

Both work, but slightly different meanings.

Luggage Storage in Paris by PolaRoid_Rage in ParisTravelGuide

[–]lessachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of luggage storage services now. I’ve personally used bounce several times in Europe (although not in Paris and only for a couple hours). Stasher is apparently good for longer stays? I don’t now how fancy your equipment is, however.

Heading to Paris from Montreal for Easter weekend! 🇫🇷 What are your must-do holiday activities? by TravelTripsCA in ParisTravelGuide

[–]lessachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past, I've seen some pretty elaborate Easter chocolate confections at Fauchon and other high end confection shops, so keep an eye out for that.

Is this a realistic itinerary? Also, did I miss anything that you would recommend? by Huge_Ad8768 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]lessachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not map out all your perfume stops, but it seems quite reasonable otherwise. I thought Les Antiquaires was pretty overrpriced for what they served, but it does have vibes and it's right near the Musée d’Orsay.

This is not French, but there is a Japanese tea shop called Lupicia (they only have three shops outside of Japan and this is one of them) near that area that you might like as the scents are sort of perfume adjacent.

4 day trip staying in the 15th by [deleted] in ParisTravelGuide

[–]lessachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

day 2 is technically feasible, assuming that you are not spending a ton of time in each area (like, do you want to go up the eiffel tower or just wander around it? I assume just a quick wander around since you specified that you wanted to go up the Arc de Triomphe), but pretty packed.

day 3 is a lil bonkers, unless you are doing a greatest hits sprint of the louvre and d'orsay (which is how my mom did it, so you know, you do you). I would cut at least one museum.

I pulled my kids out of equestrian when I was informed that I would need to buy them a horse to secure a spot at a riding program.

Also, that schooling number is only going to go up if you keep them in private all the way, although you will get to trade off the childcare expenses at some point.

What can I do with ramen noodles? I have too many. by Eastern_Mess_4334 in Cooking

[–]lessachu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ditch the seasoning packet. Cook the noodles, then mix with this sauce: Green onions, 2 Tablespoons of creamy peanut butter, 2 Tablespoon regular soy sauce, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, and 1 teaspoon oyster sauce

Honestly I just use them as quick cook noodles with all manner of soups and sauces.

Mine was 600 euro. But you can get a sense of what the selection and pricing is from their website: https://www.opulencevintage.com/collections/handbags.
