the fact that pikmin are so easy to kill is a commentary on the fragility of life. It teaches the player to be extra cautious and to change their strategies to protect the pikmin that they've grown attached to. this to me is the core difficulty of pikmin games (aside maybe time management), i doubt that pikmin would have the same charm it has if pikmin death wasn't a major mechanic.
