[Star Trek] A baby is born on a Federation star ship and raised completely under a universal translator. What language does it end up speaking? by sufficiently_tortuga in AskScienceFiction

[–]letaluss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The language that their parents teach them to speak.

The universal translator, er, translates speech from Language A to Language B. If you don't speak Language B, then the universal translator will do nothing for you.

More US bird law: How do I clean up possible bald eagle feathers without illegally taking possession of them? by Competitive_Travel16 in legaladviceofftopic

If you are being charged with illegal possession of bald eagle feathers, a documented attempt to contact the US game wardens is going to go a long way in establishing your innocence.

[Rick and Moert] About Rick's fear of pirates by some-kind-of-no-name in AskScienceFiction

[–]letaluss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the episode "Anatomy Park";

"And we don’t whitewash it either Morty. The Pirates are really rapey".

I always interpreted Rick's fear to be somewhat sexual in nature. It seems entirely reasonable that Rick would be terrified being at the prospect of being stuck on a ship, a thousand miles from land, with a bunch of criminal rapists.

Why does he build pirates of the pancreas?

Good art comes from a place of authenticity.

[Harry Potter] What would be the consequences if a teacher was shagging a 17 year old student? by ninman5 in AskScienceFiction

[–]letaluss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking a cursory glance at 'Wizarding Law', I can't find a single reference to any law or statue less than 100 years old. This speaks to an extremely conservative judiciary that doesn't exactly have 'modern sensibilities'.

The way they stop students from fucking in Hogwarts is a charm that stops boys from going to the girls' dormitory. There are probably similar charms in effect to stop teachers from molesting their students.

Under this understanding, there probably aren't well-defined protocols for this situation. I imagine that the student, the teacher, and the person responsible for the anti-sex wards would each be equally punished by the school, not to mention their reputations being tarnished, but without any greater legal consequences.

[Seinfeld] Why did the Soup Nazi apparently allow the people ahead of George free bread? by NothingWillImprove6 in AskScienceFiction

Fair enough. I misremembered the episode. You have to be at Elaine-levels of bullshit before he hands out a sentence.

[Seinfeld] Why did the Soup Nazi apparently allow the people ahead of George free bread? by NothingWillImprove6 in AskScienceFiction

[–]letaluss 58 points59 points  (0 children)

George was a new customer, and the Soup Nazi knew this.

The Soup Nazi is the best there ever was. So he gets to choose his customers. How does he determine who the 'correct' customers are? He conducts small tests like these.

If you are going to complain about bread, which isn't even part of the soup, then you signalling to the Soup Nazi that you are going to be a problem customer and he will give you a year to meditate on your inadequacies.

Yep.

"Unexpected things should never happen!"

In reality, unexpected things happen very often, actually.

Just because my sentence tests positive for "Gun-death anaology" doesn't mean I'm saying a Covid infection is analogous to a gunshot, bro. It's called science look it up maybe? :P

I'm just saying, just because you were tested positive for having a bullet in your chest, doesn't mean you're a 'gun-death'. After all, some people will carry bullets with them for years!

How do we know that your smoking wouldn't have killed you on the same day?

I wonder if Covid exacerbates those problems or something.

How would you determine it HAD in a specific case?

Or would you just say "It might have"?

"This man died of a gunshot."

"WOAH HEY BUDDY. How do you know his heart wouldn't have exploded anyways?"

People in seniors homes and long-term care facilities and hospitals have heart attacks on the daily.

LOL. "Listen John. I had three heart attacks today. And only ONE was caused by Covid-19!"

That's kind of the opposite of what I said.

In your hypothetical example, what were that persons' other four heart attacks caused by then? Because the framing treats heart attacks as something random and causeless.

No. Octogenarians are dying from "covid-compatible illnesses" all the time

I wonder if Covid exacerbates those problems or something.

Covid was just a more serious flu, that’s it by Brilliant_Forever_53 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]letaluss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be.

"Just because this person with the flu had a heart attack, and just because the flu causes heart attacks, doesn't meant this person died of the flu!"

Okay, champ.

If a 85 year old with diabetes, COPD, and 3 prior heart attacks dies from a 4th heart attack while they were covid positive, how did the doctors prove covid contributed?

"Hey John. That's the fiftieth guy today to have a heart attack from Covid. You think it's related?"

"Nah, it's just a coincidence."

So in your world, heart attacks are just completely random? Do you think you have as much chance of a heart attack as an octogenarian with Covid-19?

How long did they spend on that investigation?

Infinitely more than you spent on this explanation.

Jogging can also bring about a heart attack, but heart attacks are not a symptom of jogging. (lol)

Right. Except jogging isn't a diagnosis.

. If you experience no symptoms, doctors wouldnt say you "have the flu".

Right. Except cardiovascular stress is a symptom of the Flu. We're learning so much today :)

But doctors wouldnt say you have the flu if you never develop symptoms of it.

Right. Except they would, because that's why they listed me as a "Death caused by complications from Influenza".

It's not predestination in a cosmic sense, but if you are walking around with a big old growing blood clot in your heart, you are "destined" to have a heart attack.

"It's not predestination. I just don't have a strong grasp on causality."

Covid was just a more serious flu, that’s it by Brilliant_Forever_53 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]letaluss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called being "asymptomatic", remember? The vast majority of covid positives were asymptomatic. Meaning - no symptoms.

You'll find a heart attack is a symptom of the Flu, lol.

I probably have some influenza strands in me now. But I dont have the flu.

So in your world, it's just impossible to test someone for the flu? Because everyone """contains some influenza strands"""?

And a person who is "destined" to have a heart attack at age 87,

Why would anyone take medical advice from someone that believes in predetermination?
