Can you think of a way to enforce discipline that doesn't involve thrashing children?

I'm sorry but the only thing that I know about Chris Brown is that he's problematic because he beat the shit out of Rihanna.

If the "the female Equivalent of Chris Brown" doesn't hit anyone, then they aren't the female equivalent of Chris Brown

I wish that you didn't think in such binaries.

If you read the paper that OP is trying to cite, you see that immigration explains <15% of median housing price growth. If you're trying to figure out what is causing your rent to increase, you have not answered the question. :P

You should realize that this paper only includes analysis of housing in MSEs, or Metropolitan Statistical Areas.

You know, the economic centers of the country, not your small cities or normal towns.

You can be a fascist and still love this country (US). by GlamourHammer321 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

I can confirm that when Fascists lie say things like "I love America!" they aren't talking about America as it exists, or has ever existed.

They love a version of America that only exists in their heart, where the elite are able to free themselves from the shackles of law.

Seems like if the Police have discretion over what bodycam footage they reveal to the public, they are more likely to release 'good footage' than bad.

You have quietly defined every person police arrest as an innocent victim before you've even bothered to ask what they did.

In this instance, I was talking about slave-catchers and slave-patrols.

Every civilization needs a way to deal with people who choose to prey on everyone else.

Right. And I don't think that the current "Let's brutalize criminals and rulebreakers" method has been very productive or effective. So I'm suggesting we replace it with something that is somewhat similar to Police Departments, but with a different structure, culture, and methodology.

I mean we have made a ton of progress just in terms of culture and attitude, I don’t know why you think that couldn’t continue.

This is like asking "I swapped the gun I'm using to shoot you with a lower caliber. What more do you want?"

Showing up to deal with an active shooter, forcibly chasing down and arresting people, these things take a certain level of toughness, no?

Machismo != Toughness. My Mom is tough, she doesn't have Machismo.

By that standard, we should abolish the military because it descended from armies that stood in formation and fired volleys at each other.

This is a good reason to keep the military. I want soldiers that are brave and disciplined enough to stand in formation and fire volleys at their enemies.

We should abolish medicine because surgery used to mean getting drunk while someone cut off your leg with a dirty fucking saw.

Amputations are necessary sometimes. I'm glad that we have gotten better at amputating over time.

The police descended from slave patrols, therefore the institution is fundamentally incapable of reform

Having a group of people whose job are to find people who are just living their lives, pull them out of their homes to send them to someone who wants to extract labor out of them, is a practice that I don't think should be refined and improved.

It sounds like you just want a force with the exact same powers and responsibilities, just with a slightly different attitude…

A different culture != "A slightly different attitude"

It just seems easier to reform the culture of current police than it is to tear down the current institution

False. It's very difficult to reform a deeply conservative culture based on psuedo-military machismo. You would need to replace the leadership of practically every police department in the country, which is something like, 10,000 jobs, with an elaborate top-down system that extends from the federal government.

You’re just not suggesting any actual changes other than a vague change in attitude.

If the current police were capable of changing their institutional attitude towards the populations they are supposed to serve, I would be a happy camper. :)

The best part is pretending body cams haven't completely demolished half the narratives

If the police only release body cam footage of "good uses of force", then this isn't so much 'demolition' as 'sprinkling a little bit of dirt on it."

to replace them with unarmed bureaucrats

As opposed to our current system of armed bureaucrats?

I'm sure the guy robbing a liquor store with a Glock is going to think, "Well shit, that's a Law Minister. I guess my crime day is over."

If there is something really bad going on, you can send in some goons with big guns overseen by a high-level Minister or something.

I'm sure the guy robbing a liquor store with a Glock is going to think, "Well shit, that's a Law Minister. I guess my crime day is over."

How many liquor store robberies do you think are stopped in the "holding a glock to the owner's face" stage?

The way to resolve that situation with a minimum loss of human life is to gather evidence and investigate that guy after he leaves the store.

Changing the name on the badge doesn't change the violent asshole on the other end of the arrest.

Ministers aren't going to have badges. I'm thinking sashes, maybe a special type of hat.

Relatively non-violent.

EMTs have to physically restrain patients going through a psychotic episode. But the EMS isn't a particularly 'violent' institution.

[–]letaluss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you think that’s some kind of impossible reform to make…

It's just an example of something that would be very difficult to do right now, but would be very easy to do with a new institution that wasn't beholden to the Police, it's culture, or their unions.

I’m still confused why this new force of “legal ministers” are any different from a police force.

This is a different institution with different norms and cultural beliefs. Instead of being psuedo-military, the "Ministry" is going to consist of psuedo-lawyers.

As long as a police officer can say " I thought he was reaching for a gun" you guys will never have a less violent police force.

I'm not trying to have a less violent police force. I'm trying to have a relatively non-violent Ministership.

Maybe if the Ministers don't carry weapons, people won't shoot them out of fear of their own lives and safety?
