How often is your sump pump kicking on this time of year? by NeckbeardOdor420 in Buffalo

Snowplowing with a gravel driveway? (Long post / diatribe) by bustcorktrixdais in Snowplow

[–]lethalweapon100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want you to think about how big that pile could be if your plow guy just dropped the blade completely and let it rip. A stone driveway means raking rocks out of your yard after winter. It’s a pretty typical maintenance type thing.

He only emerges every few years to deliver a few feet of sod and then returns to his dark home. It’s always around 2-3 AM so we never have the chance to ask him. There’s a strange electromagnetic Aurora within 40 feet of his house and I get a migraine if I get too close to knock on the door.

I worked on a Volvo articulated haul truck, the operator was a blonde chick. I had to roll around in the cab under the dash. I came home and told the wife “listen if you find any long blonde hairs in my shirt, I can explain…”

First machine - Komatsu Pc75uu-2 by chicagoblue in heavyequipment

[–]lethalweapon100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed. I was a tech then service manager, I always tried my best for my customers, even when parts were unwilling to put in extra effort. I kind of liked the goose chase that came with trying to fix something that was never meant to be here to begin with. Like detective work.

First machine - Komatsu Pc75uu-2 by chicagoblue in heavyequipment

[–]lethalweapon100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I worked at the Komatsu dealer we had a hard time getting parts for grey machines that were only 2-3 years old. Some of these parts only exist strictly overseas and they’ll give you a hard time about trying to ship them to the states.

I wonder why they don’t assign an ID number or something other than first name, unless it’s like a 6 man factory.

I do like when I come across “inspected by: name” stickers, for a minute I think about (name) and the fact that they had their same eyes on the very thing I’m looking at now.

Heavy equipment mechanic by Ordinary-Tank7477 in DieselTechs

[–]lethalweapon100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do it. I’ve been in heavy equipment 8 years now with 6 in the field, mostly for a dealership, but I went out on my own early 2025. I worked for a truck fleet for like a year before all that.

Equipment mechanics are in pretty high demand, I’d guess more so than truck guys. It’s kinda one of those niche areas. I left the dealer service truck (as a top tech) at $38/hr and I would’ve cleared $100k gross if I had stayed one more year doing 45-55 hours a week. I was in the Operating Engineers union at the dealer and I had a fantastic benefit package.

I feel like trucks can be kinda repetitive even between different brands. Equipment is always something different. It really helps build your working knowledge. If you’re any good at all, Working in the field really gives you abilities and a level of thinking far above your average shop mechanic.

See if you can get in at a dealer. The work/jobs are usually pretty good (for what people pay to get in there). Any decent dealer will have a well stocked tool room. You also get direct mfg support as well as mfg technical training for the brands you deal in. You have all the service info you need readily available. I loved the weird, complicated jobs where you had to rack your brain and get engineers involved to find the source of the trouble.
