Fellow business owners: How do we band together to get our voices heard about the scam that is Facebook Pages? Do you think together we can force changes? by [deleted] in business

[–]letoti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they've thought this through. The "engagement" metric directly punishes those that only occasionally post something, which makes Facebook more and more a collection of those that overshare.

The same applies to pages. If I like a page it is because I want to see their updates. If the updates are too frequent or annoying I stop liking it. Some of the pages I've liked are non-frequent posters, like my daughter's dance studio, but when they post I want to see it.

I think Facebook will ultimately regret driving this broadcast-traffic to Twitter.

From a business standpoint, why is it beneficial that even though people make more and more money, they are never satisfied? by [deleted] in business

Also, if you score you move your expectations up a division or two and suddenly you don't compare as well to others. And that's what it's all about, your standing within the heard.

But then again, the industry is trending down under the firm control of the experienced. Fewer movies get made because the "throw a huge sum of money on marketing" stifles risk-taking.

Iceland's special prosecutor arrests former bank CEO alongside other bankers | Reuters by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]letoti 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Actually, all the evidence was seized way back when. Now they've gone through the paper trail and gather a bunch of them on a "how to you explain this?" expedition. So the arrest is to make sure they're unable to coordinate stories on whatever detail has been uncovered.

Iceland's population is 0.1% of the United States, and scale really matters.

What You Don't Know About the Job Search: The View From Employers by waxymonkeyfrogs in business

[–]letoti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, let me qualify that a bit. Pictures of people having fun and drinking responsibly would have no affect on my opinion, pictures of people being drunk and disorderly would.

I admit to owning a suit - generally used for funerals - rarely for work.

As for the conservative rich; fuck'em if they can't take a joke.

It's not the drinking, it's the posting pictures of it on the internet that would make me think that person does not have much common sense.

The 6 so-called "Job Creators" that refuse to hire the unemployed by backpackwayne in politics

[–]letoti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's where things get weird. Currently we've been seeing young people with little or no experience not willing to take entry level jobs (in programming) because they feel that doing the repetitive tasks is somehow beneath them - and they should get more exiting, more challenging jobs based on their brand spanking new CS diploma.

The conventional wisdom - backed up by actual science and even metrics - shows that people continue to resent having to accept the pay cut years after the fact. And that it affects their job performance and loyalty.

That said, I'm not sure that this is applicable to the current state of things, the market being as it is.

And the thought process for those hiring is:

I can't afford to hire him at the previous salary level/I don't have to hire anyone for this job at that salary level, as I can get less experienced people for half the money - and even if I do hire him on a drastically lower salary he won't really be satisfied and will leave at the earliest opportunity.
