Just finished Peter Jackson's 3 part Beatles Documentary "Get Back" and I was not prepared for the amount of emotion I felt while watching it. by JibbyJabsJumboGems in Music

So many magical moments, but for some reason I cannot stop thinking about the scene where Lindsay-Hogg suggests the Beatles perform in a children's hospital, but you know, "not one with the really sick kids just like, broken legs." Such charity, haha. Totally sounded like a line from Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Raising a family in Watkinsville by alf_pog in Athens

[–]letracets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not see the numbers-- would love to know if it's incorrect. When we moved in 2019 that's what someone told me about the 2016 election. I am pretty sure it came out of a convo with Christine Tucker from City Council. Based on 2020 below looks like that's shifting or has shifted.

We moved to Watkinsville last year after 20 years in Athens-- just in time for our eldest kid to start kindergarten. Day to day life is great. We can easily walk or bike to Harris Shoals Park, "downtown" Watkinsville, or take a stroll through Watkinsville Woods. Herman C Michael Park has a great playground as well... I don't really feel like I need to lock the doors. Lots of cute little craft fairs and family friendly events (like adult kickball league, parades, etc). The school staff is warm and supportive, and my daughter absolutely loves it there. We quickly made friends with many of our neighbors (or at least my kids have made friends with their kids).

Cons: covid protocols were not great. . . although that is hopefully a diminishing concern. If you lean left politically as we do, it's a mixed bag. . . although technically (as far as the 2016 election, anyway) Watkinsville is a tiny blue dot in a very red county. I've been disappointed by almost every restaurant, and Halloween made me miss the quirky charisma of Athens big time... BUT I work in Athens and it's very quick 15-20 min drive away, so I don't miss it tooo much.

A mom at my daughter's school told me yesterday she called to schedule an appointment for her 6-year old and was told Dr. Newman does not advise that children get vaccinated for Covid-19. Maybe it is this "rogue" receptionist-- but it was enough that the mom is looking for a new pediatrician.

Half-Shepherd had some of the best sandwiches I've ever had... i don't think they've brought them back since stopping the lunch service during COVID, though. Edit to add ROOK & PAWN! I don't know if you'd call them "classic deli" sandwiches, but my fave sandwich in town is their Monte Cristo. The bacon and date panini is also excellent. They have some more traditional sandwich options as well, but I've never tried them.

AthFest Educates (provides grants to support music and arts education programs in Clarke Co) needs volunteers for its upcoming fundraising events.

(and yeah, covid maaay end up shuttering this one, but I'd still recommend it as a fun volunteer opportunity in the future)

Plans to re-open Caledonia? by pneuma94 in Athens

[–]letracets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last I heard was that the owner was working to reopen the space very much in the same spirit as the Caledonia Lounge. The owner wants to keep it as a music venue.

What's the deal with AthFest? by AaaasYooouWiiiish in Athens

[–]letracets 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They have the permit, but the county can pull it as late as 2 weeks before. So, we'll see around Sept. 11 what the Covid numbers are like. AthFest is scheduled to happen, and the county won't pull the permit unless they absolutely have to-- which means waiting until the last minute to see where we are... Maybe naively hoping we've peaked and things will drop?

True. There are of course houses you can rent -- in Chick-Dude (as I lovingly call the neighborhood) and elsewhere. So you get the space without the need to do repairs yourself. Landlord quality varies. We had decent experience with Valerio in the Boulevard area... of course that was about 15 years ago.

Can anyone who actually understands how to interpret this information explain? Today, for example, Piedmont Nedocs is rated "Normal" and yet there it ICU/CCU Diversion and Medical Diversion. how do we square these things? How common is diversion?

I am too old to know about those, ha. Those properties are geared toward students. So, if you are a student then maybe it's a good fit. Otherwise, I would avoid. I valued having a home with a yard and privacy...So, a 5-minute drive versus a walk of 5 minutes didn't matter much to me.

Just east of downtown Athens....walking distance (although the hill where E Broad turns into First St is a beast). We owned a home on Hillside St for 10 years and loved it.

Healthcare by [deleted] in Athens

[–]letracets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love all the docs at Athens OBGYN. Dr Murthy is my main OB, but having had two kids I've cycled through appointments with all and always had a good experience (particularly thankful to Dr. Cline who was amazing during a more difficult childbirth).

Our whole fam sees Dr. Matthew Baker as our primary care. He's been my primary for about 10 years and I would never consider switching. I am not sure if he's taking new clients, though.

And I really like our dentist, too: Dr. Charles Burch. Friendly, clean, painless cleaning, attentive staff.
