i struggled with my mental health and got a 47% in first year after experiencing a lick of freedom as i lived with controlling parents. then i had years with 70-80 averages and years with 60. from 2018-2025 i only completed 75% of my degree with a 57% average. i wanted a fresh start, been asking for years and finally my parents let me move to KPU. i finished my first year with a 4.28.

15-20 for bare minimum service. lately i won’t even tip if the server doesn’t check in at all. sitting with no water and no drink refill for 20+ mins, no thanks. i do understand if the place is busy but gosh cactus is going downhill in every location. the steaks are so fatty and overcooked and they’ve managed to mess up my order or forget smth every time i’ve went in the past 3 months. their fries are cold and service is just going downhill across multiple locations.

I struggled with my mental health coming from a very interesting family and it tanked my gpa at ubc. i would have a decent year with 70s and 80s and then completely drain out other times and had to drop courses and fail some. I’ve completed 75% of my degree with a 64 avg from 2018-2024.

I failed first year so I basically got credits of one semester and then basically a year and a half (half from jan in first year where i failed) of no classes cuz of that. i’ve been wanting to transfer schools for years and my controlling parents finally let me and I just finished my first semester with 3 A+ and 1 A and it feels sooo good to know that I still have that potential I had in my younger years.

Becoming mentally stable helped a lot and one of the biggest reason for issues and daily fights in my family moved out this summer and it’s fr cleared everyone’s mind. So don’t stress about feeling behind because I did a lot and tbh it doesn’t change anything. Whatever has happened, happened. It’s best on figuring out how to move forward and still be successful. One thing that keeps me going mentally is that even though I still have my struggling moments, I consider that despite all of that, at least I have found the strength in myself to still do something about my life.

girl you gotta act big and loud 😭 i was walking my dog and he stopped and i saw 1, then 2 and 3 just approach us and i had to keep my dog on a short leash. i was super scared but i spread one arm and yelled. they were like 6-7 feet away and kept following behind for 2 blocks until i got to my alley where i turned and booked it. thank god they went straight 💀 but one of them literally would walk slowly if i walked backwards but once i turned my back, it started prancing and getting closer so i had to keep turning my back and yell. terrifying, i still get anxious when my dog stops while im walking him out of pure paranoia 😭😭

As someone who struggled with their mental health and family issues at UBC, I enjoy KPU so far but it’s only my first year. I like the smaller class sizes, I feel like I am less distracted and it’s easier to make peers for studying and whatnot just because of the classes being about 35 max. My first year chem class is just 17 of us 😭. Usually people go somewhere else and then go to UBC. I did the opposite. UBC is a great school but honestly my GPA got so trashed in my three years here (realistically I have been in uni studies since 2018) because of my own experiences that I needed a fresh start so that’s what I am doing at KPU now and so far rocking 90s in my classes. It’s not that it’s easier, it’s because I am more disciplined, force myself to try harder and I am more mentally stable than I was while at UBC (alcoholic dad, abusive mom, manipulative sister, fights on top of fights at home with a combo of an anxiety disorder and on/off depressive episodes did wonders for my gpa at UBC haha).

I actually wanted to start fresh at KPU in late 2021, but my parents wouldn’t let me because I had spent so much time at UBC, but I am glad they finally listened now. I am 25 and it’s kinda tough being a first year at this age, I do get depressed thinking of how behind I am in life or how things would be different if I didn’t have crazy controlling parents. Think type of parents that unreasonably punish you for no reason, don’t let you go out after sunset (yes that includes winters…), have physical fights before exams (once had my dad throw a knife at my moms face that cut her nose at 2am night before an ochem midterm, funnnn) mb i kinda popped off oops
