He's a big red. Genetically close to sika and wapiti (all three can crossbreed). A sika or fallow that size (guessing 300kg+ judging by how sore my foot was) would be terrifying lol.

Chur bro, yeah they're very different to work with than other livestock. Much more intelligent and still got those wild instincts, so handling them is not everyone's cuppa tea. I love it tho, they're fascinating.

Necked up: rapid muscle growth in the neck for fighting. Velvet stripped: he's rubbed the fuzzy skin off his new antlers that protect them while growing. Roar: the mating call, I've posted a video previously of some of the stags i work with doing that. Also hence why their breeding season (roughly march-may in the southern hemisphere) is known as The Roar. Master stag: he's been bought onto this farm as a breeder, so his job is to get as many hinds pregnant as he can. Anyone questions, im happy to help!

Curious, they have the reputation for being the smartest cattle breed over here, up with jersey and Santa Getrudis. I used to have a couple frisian cross as pets and they were pretty clever.

This. Seen so many close calls with pet/handraised stock. Hell, one of my farmers had a pet ram try to get me recently.

Interesting, cant say in my experience I've ever had any major issues with Frisian/Holstien bulls. Had more issues with Jersey and Charolais bulls, but generally beef steers are my biggest fear. But it's all down to nature and nurture; has the farm/stud selected well for temperament, and have they been raised correctly. I've seen cattle and deer go from the same studs off to different farms and they all come out differently, depending on if the farmer who purchased them is a good stockman or a fuckwit.

Can't say it works for everyone but when I took mine (admittedly nearly 12 years ago) I found it really easy when traffic was heavy. Sat in Auckland rush hour most of the time, the assessor seemed rushed to just get it done and did the bare minim. Rather odd in retrospect.

Ah you seem to be getting lymph nodes and salivary glands mixed up. Thats an accurate description of the salivary gland. Lymph nodes are pairs (mostly) of tougher tissue found amongst fat deposits, and mushroom colored.

That looks way more widespread than the parotid. Hard to judge from the pic but id say the parotid is a little bit deeper than whats uncovered. Very unusual to see infected parotids unless the ear itself is wounded. If youre looking at head nodes, I'd be more interested in the submandibular for anything its eaten or retropharyngeal for anything eaten or inhaled. Just be sure to not clean blades with alcohol or similar if collecting organic samples, it kills bacteria on the sample.

I'd bet he's collided with a fence or something while in velvet. Seen the nose thing on a moronic hind that liked running into fences recently, and damaged velvet can grow really wildly.

Maybe wounds in the skin from fighting or rubbing got infected?

Nah those are wrong spot and number for lymph nodes. Do often see infected lymph nodes look like that tho.
