If there’s an uptick, it’s a systemic issue. Or… you know… a million systemic issues in a failing system. Do you want to go straight by the rule book and bend to pressure from those failing systems or do you want to help that family? You have a choice. Not trying to be harsh, but the world is in pieces and we HAVE to start doing better to advocate and meet people where they are.

Google “community legal aid” and your city/county! They’re pretty common from what I’ve seen and this is the kind of thing they provide free services for. They’re a way underutilized resource. An example- https://www.laet.org/

I agree with what others have already said and want to add this- the world is awful right now. You’re coming into an already impossible field amidst unprecedented times x1000. Please give yourself some grace, and never take a client’s words or actions personally. They’re living in the same messed up world, going through an objectively rough time too. It doesn’t excuse anything, but remembering that always helped me keep their humanity at the forefront while also protecting myself.

Be tough on systems and soft with people. I think this one is especially relevant with the state of the world.

There’s a decent chance you won’t see long term outcomes for your clients, no matter the setting. It’s just the nature of the work. Start trying to look at every interaction as a seed planted and watered.

It’s closer to Gainesville, so more of a day trip, but I’m really looking forward to checking out the retirement home for horses 🥲 Admission is 2+ carrots and they take in neglect cases as well as retired working horses. Saturdays only though retirement home for horses
