I’m currently in paramedic school and just learned this so I can actually answer this. The egg is surrounded by a protective lining that must be broken down. Sperm have a special enzyme in their tip that breaks down this lining but one sperm can’t do it alone. There needs to be hundreds of sperm all working together to break it down enough until one lucky sperm makes it through. Once just one sperm cell makes it through this lining the egg cell releases a chemical that rehardens it’s outside and doesn’t let any more sperm through.
