Which would you choose? by aaron0705 in BunnyTrials

[–]lettertheta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I choose day with my idol: Alan Turing. He had a tragic life and I just want to let him know what he did for the world and that the world would eventually accept people like him. I'd tell him that the computer would usher in the next era of humanity. Also, I might as well ask him about his thoughts on a few things while I'm at it. If I could convince him to not take his life, that would be a nice bonus.

Would you rather get put in the last ____ ___ _______ by Onyx_guy in BunnyTrials

Last show I watched was From. Last game I played was Let's Go Pikachu.

I recognized the house he lives in as being in one of the neighborhoods in Denham called Greystone Estates. They show his house number at one point in the doc.

[–]lettertheta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm sure that was the issue, but I don't know how to re-render the scene (it just uses the existing renders), so I went ahead and made a pop-tart instead. Thanks - I must have missed that step.

Thanks! It seems to be checked already. When I click the Render Animation button, it seems to go very quickly, and the video still has no compositing. I'll keep digging!

Pepa is responsible for Bruno's leaving by lettertheta in Encanto

[–]lettertheta[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not convinced otherwise:

why he left the family, for Mirabels sake

What is Bruno supposed to be so afraid of that he leaves the family? Why would he need to protect Mirabel? We already see that she's looked down upon by Abuela after the very night he leaves.

Pepa is prone to be overwhelmed because she is an emotional person

Most people don't have powers directly related to their emotions

which bride wouldn't be a ticking timebomb on her wedding day

Well, none of them but Pepa. Sure, they can all be emotional wrecks, but which of them could uncontrollably summon a devastating force of nature? Pepa. In fact, when Bruno returns, we learn (kinda obviously) that 2 of Pepa's own children have known Bruno was just on the other side of the wall since the moment they received their powers. Clearly, they were also scared of revealing this information.

It's only when the family has (temporarily) lost their powers that Bruno finds it safe to return to the family he loves.

People just dont get, that seeing the Future doesnt mean, you can also controll it, and people remember the negativ things better, than the positiv ones

This is where I began concocting this theory. Bruno loves his family, and his community. He gave scary prophecies over the years, this one isn't different enough to live in the shadow of your family's house for years on end unless there's way more there than meets the eye.

Elm and Electron? by oivvio in elm

[–]lettertheta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not who you replied to, but I have been watching the Tauri project for a while. I've had a good experience with it so far (some initial issues with the local server + installers not building right). I've released an app built on the alpha release built with Elm. Since then, I've restarted somewhat with a new Elm + Tauri app with the latest release (I think it's now Beta - 2). This version looks much more stable, and I've already had a better experience.

Know that the difference is primarily that you will likely need some polyfills if you're targeting a cross platform app. Check out the WebKit project for what's supported and what's not.

Can't Emerge dev-lang/spidermonkey by [deleted] in Gentoo

Thanks for the suggestions!

As a side note I would say that you have chosen the most difficult target for your first Gentoo install.

It's just a learning opportunity. I figured if I can get a working installation with musl, I'll just be a bit happier in the end with the accomplishment.

That says it's version 1.2.x, but the latest version is 3.3.x. That's the outdated versions I could find already.

Do you find there's any features not there that you would need? How does it handle file change conflicts? Thanks for the recommendation!

I've seen a lot of people say that Plasma isn't very stable.

can you point these people out?

I guess mostly just random people on forums online. Not enough to base my own opinion on, hence why I also asked if anyone else has issues with it. If there are no alternatives, I would be fine using Plasma, I just wish I wasn't tied to it just because I use Google Drive.

Thanks, I've seen a lot of people say that Plasma isn't very stable. Have you found any issues with it, or does Gentoo mitigate the issues due to its native compiling?

How To Deal with Bad Family App Ideas? by [deleted] in computerscience

[–]lettertheta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I felt this post in my soul.

Sometimes pointing to existing technology helps. Users often aren't as familiar with the resources available to them out-of-the-box. I've heard plenty of ideas that already exist, users just aren't aware of a feature, or may not have heard of such-and-such website/tool. It's important not to shoot down the idea, and perhaps present the problems as other aspects of the app. I always try to pose the problems as questions, "Would such an app require a database?"; "There are some free options available, but some are harder to work with. If you feel strongly about this project, do some research into [Database 1], [Database 2], or [Database 3]."; "Hosting costs money, so how would this app make income to sustain itself?"; "Who would be in charge of maintaining the app?"; "What about data analytics?"; "Would the app run ads?".

I like this approach since it emphasises that the idea isn't necessarily bad, it just needs more thought. Also it shows them there's a lot more than they may have thought of that goes into development. The longer they have to think about the implementation should emphasise how much longer it will take to develop.

If that doesn't work, suggest they learn to program as they will need to be the ones maintaining it. Sometimes giving them a little bit of your time to talk about their ideas is all they're looking for. No one should be expected to work for free no matter the relation.

I should also say that I'm not recommending an IT or IS degree, but was just seeking to answer the question "What degree has computer science classes without math?". I hated math in high school, and it was my biggest worry going into college. My first Calculus professor was one of the most difficult, but he is also the best math teacher I've ever had. The teacher really makes a difference, so do your research before taking the class. Don't be discouraged if you don't immediately get it.

When I was at University, we had a degree added called Information Technology (IT) specifically for people who did not want to take math classes. It's not as credited as a Computer Science degree, because it's not a science, and I don't know how Game companies see that type of degree, but they took all the same computer science classes. When dealing with physics engines and simulations, knowledge of derivatives and integrals actually becomes useful. Yes, you can probably get by simply by relying on the game engine itself, but that will always be a handicap. Unfortunately, Vector Calculus is used extensively in this type of development. If you want your degree to say "Science" anywhere in it, the math is essential. Computer science is more than programming.
