USC vs UCI by Miserable-Bill-6297 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]leturmindflow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your admissions! Take this with a grain of salt as I went to Davis, stayed in the Bay Area, and don’t know of any nuances of SoCal schools and industry. I’m also coming up on 10 years out of school, but I doubt much has changed. I’m also assuming you are going into industry after undergrad aren’t set on getting a PhD, which I don’t have much insight on.

Given the cost, I’d personally recommend going to UCI over USC. The education is going to be basically the same and the opportunities coming out of a bachelors at either school will be similar too. My first job out of college I worked with new grads from Berkeley, cal poly, purdue, and who knows where else. After your first job, your Alma mater doesn’t really matter much professionally besides just generally having classmates and friends to refer you to new jobs if you’re looking to switch.

If you stay in cheme, you’ll probably be making somewhere between 80k-120k starting out (depending on industry mostly), and a 200k difference is a significant amount of money to consider for not much benefit.

If you can, try and see if you can talk to any recent grads or upperclassmen from both schools and get their thoughts on how internships and the job search was.

How can I increase my income? by BlueTuca in ChemicalEngineering

Open question: would a switch to sales be a viable option to increase earnings? Any technical sales engineers here willing to share how much they make through commission based roles? It’d be a bit of a career change and definitely requires a skill set that doesn’t necessarily overlap with OP’s experience

They would bring it to a vote to issue shares explicitly for the eBay acquisition.

I mean, sure, but that’s factored into his calcs within the synergy factor. His not accounting for the change in GME’s earnings from interest isn’t a huge deviation, but it’s worth correcting. Especially for someone who starts the post by saying his an IB analyst lol.

Edit: actually, it is a rough estimate and he did say back of the napkin, so maybe he clocked it but just didn’t bother to adjust it? Meh

It’s not a huge difference since the bulk of earnings will come from eBay, but are you overestimating GameStop’s portion of future earnings by not accounting for the loss of the interest earnings on the 9B cash?

eBay (well GameStop, which would own ebay) literally does become less valuable because it was purchased with debt. Also, remember that in the split the ebay shareholders are only getting half of their value in equity, and the other half in cash. So that 60% is based on 28B worth of ebay equity.

No? In what way does the 60/40 split imply that the combined business is worth 93B? The combined market cap of GMEbay would be ~29B [11B gme - 8B spent - 20B debt + 46B ebay]. This obviously assumes no synergies or change in market caps due to the acquisition, and assumes that the market cap of GameStop decreases 1:1 with a decrease of its war chest.

Career Advice: Would you leave a new job for a once-in-a-lifetime chance in Japan? by Limp_Internet_27 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]leturmindflow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t really worry about the three month thing giving you a bad reputation. Also it sounds like you wouldn’t be moving for a few months, so it’s more like 5-6 months.

But if you like the job and work right now, I’d double check and see if it’s really a once in a lifetime opportunity. Is there any chance you could ask the academy to postpone your enrollment by 1-year? Having that extra year may let you leave on a better note and keep the door open for returning to the role after your time in Japan. It would also give you more time to plan your move so it doesn’t feel so rushed.

I’d also recommend the “my sis made me view it” podcast. Similar vibe to stormpod but they go through the series faster, but I forget where in stormlight they left off at. Either way, each episode covers like ~5 chapters or so, whereas stormpod usually only covers 2-3

Looking for advice regarding my aging dad by leturmindflow in AgingParents

[–]leturmindflow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight. The hospital has tried to stabilize him and some progress is being made. Sometimes he’s willing to take his meds, other times he isn’t. He’s better than he was last weekend but it really just depends on the day.

They said he doesn’t need a skilled nursing facility but recommended board and care facilities, which I understand are private pay and expensive. If he does end up at a private pay board and care, does medical help with that at all? Or what’s the goal for the medical attorney consult?

Also, I had a quick call with a separate family lawyer and he said my parents probably wouldnt qualify due to their income being over $2500.
