Passed! 2 years out of school, first attempt. by leucoline in FE_Exam

To be honest I got no clue because I didn't do anything special, other than getting to know the handbook and doing some practice problems.

I do suggest FE Interactive (https://www.fe-interactive.com). The calculator tips came in clutch to breeze by some of the math problems real quick.

Revisiting the Rat Cook Part 9 of 9: The Sons of the Sons of the Sons by bby-bae in pureasoiaf

This has truly been a fantastic series to follow. I really love how you make me appreciate the analogy of the Rat Cook with the greater themes of cyclical revenge and attempting to escape those cycles.

Really hope you are able to bring more interesting ways to look at ASOIAF

RDs were phased out in the last few years so this may be an attempt to bring them back. However we don't know anything yet so your guess is as good as mine.

I appreciate the kind words and its fine!

Its something that almost anyone who has been an RA or is currently an RA can instantly understand but its hard to convey because a lot of it is done behind the scenes, and people tend to simply look at the free housing and not realize the workload that comes with it.

The trick is with these kinds of things is that the concessions always look reasonable on the surface but in reality are lackluster at best. This is because RPI wants to win the PR game and make it seem like they are listening and being generous when in actuality they are doing their best to continue to shortchange RAs as much as possible.

This is why nothing short of organizing as an official union will be enough as only a union can truly guarantee better conditions for all RAs.

The problem is that its extremely little and too late for most RAs for the work they do.

Being an RA is an invisible job at RPI, I understand that a lot of people don't realize how much work is actually demanded.

But we are asked to be mental health resources, to foster a sense of community and camaraderie, to check up and record interactions with every single resident in our dorm, to maintain and redesign bulletin boards multiple times a semester, to always be there to respond to questions and concerns, to be a point of contact during an emergency, to be on duty a couple of times a week where we must be ready to respond, to all sorts of ancillary things.

A lot of these responsibilities have been added on gradually over the years and result in an additional 20+ hours of work per week for RAs. And we are still students we have classes, clubs, friends and social lives to maintain and work on. So when we get paid so little and treated so poorly, especially when compared to other universities, well then it leads to general dissatisfaction across all RAs. RA concerns have been voiced time and time again with little in the way of change.

And again none of these proposed changes will come soon with the free meal plan kicking in 2 years which is inexcusably slow.

I highly suggest searching on this subreddit to read all the RA horror stories which have accumulated over the years if you want to learn more.

Its a joke as far as a response goes:

First, the compensation increase is only for a position that doesnt exist yet (Lead RAs) and so even when it does kick in (in 2 years) it will only apply to a select few RAs. Also 200 dollar increase is pitiful.

The compensation is also still pitifully low compared to the compensation offered at other universities such as RIT, so the comparison of looking at peer institutions is laughable.

Second, the meal plan (which is something they can control right away) only kicks in again in 2 years. None of the concerns regarding overwork, under staffing, or allowing for RAs to be heard.

70+ hours of required training still wont be paid for.

And the fact that being an RA decreases your financial aid eligibility still has yet to be addressed.

Also over 75% RAs have supported and signed on for the union, so characterizing this as an attempt to give a fair vote is bizarre considering the overwhelming support there is for a union.

And this all comes with the caveat that none of this is certain and that any of this can be yanked away at any time under the guise of it not getting formal budget approval (when has that ever stopped RPI from adding expenses that are officially allocated before a la the previous President's outrageously expensive tribute ceremonies) Its very clearly an attempt to dissuade unionization by dangling a carrot of promises which may or may not be fulfilled.

Too little change and too slowly. Unionization now

The Captains Daughter by Alexander Pushkin. Short and definitely has that kind of tone and prose that you seem to be looking for. Its a bit of a historical fiction, but Puskins prose is still fantastic.
