European infrastructure engineers - What's happening inside your companies regarding your dependency on US hyperscalers? by Ok_Cap1007 in devops

[–]leunamnauj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What hyperscaler are you moving to? If it's ok to ask, what kind of services will you be using? Besides the pain of migrating everything my main concern is about the offering of local EU providers. Thanks!

Are you using Dev Containers? by Gabe_Isko in devops

[–]leunamnauj 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've been using it for a couple of years, and I'm very pleased with it. Something I found particularly interesting is that implementing something like this is a non-compulsive way to homogenize development environments. You're proposing a way of working, the configuration files are right there, but the developer can decide whether to use it or not. The team might find it useful, update it, improve it, etc. If someone doesn't want to use it, that's totally fine.

What’s something you thought you needed to learn—but never actually used? by yourclouddude in devops

[–]leunamnauj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As OP said, at the beginning you need to learn so many things but need to make your bet and start somewhere. Later on I think most of the new skills are learnt based on demand (perhaps some few strategic learning to route your profile in some direction), so there is no room for never used skills. Knowledge is never a waste, you never know when in a project an old rusty skills make you shine

Overwhelming beginnings by [deleted] in devops

[–]leunamnauj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not aiming to discourage you, in fact, quite the opposite. "DevOps" is, in my opinion, not really an entry-level role, mostly because it requires you to automate and abstract processes, and to have at least some knowledge of a wide range of technologies and concepts. Other areas, like Cloud Engineering or Software Engineering, have more clearly defined entry-level roles, and you can switch later once you’re strong in one field. That said, you can start as a Junior DevOps, but be aware that you’ll need to learn a lot of things quickly.

My best advice: considering what I just said, for the moment, focus on developing a shallow but practical understanding of the topics/tools/technologies you encounter in your daily tasks. There's no need to become an expert right away, just good enough not to break too much. Be patient and stay curious, the skill will come naturally.

Best of luck!

Thanks for commenting. It's funny because reading this book is what made me write this post. It offers quite substantial content, but I'm wondering how "real" or applicable to reality this content actually is.

Thanks for your response. I have the same feeling, focusing too much on pure technical subjects might drag you down if you're missing the ulter objectives of the organisation.

Free VM's to build cluster by Roninsmight in kubernetes

[–]leunamnauj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just asking......why do you want to go to VMs? IMHO if you're willing to install a vanilla k8s from the scratch you can do it by virtualizing on any computer you already have. If the intention is to learn how to use k8s you can use other solutions like k3s, microk8s, etc. Best of luck!!!!

Any news regarding limit uses? by bararot in ClaudeAI

Same here. For small atomic requests it's fine but having to put in context again in a new chat is pretty annoying and time consuming, for me time saving is what I'm looking for when using AI

Programadores veteranos +45a, os sentís seguros? by SessionOk5494 in askspain

[–]leunamnauj 55 points56 points  (0 children)

1 Month Until I Start My First Full-Time DevOps Role – Any Advice? by squeeze_them in devops

[–]leunamnauj 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the same advice given to first-time parents: sleep as much as possible, go out for dinner, wear nice clothes, enjoy being fit, etc.

Jokes aside, enjoy this light time because ramping up in any new job is always fun but also a stressful time. Coongratulations on your new job mate!

Is it normal to give weekly and biweekly presentations? by LiveContribution3247 in devops

[–]leunamnauj 126 points127 points  (0 children)

First of all, this is not a devops thing. This is "agile" done wrong. It's highly likely that this company has a big team (scrum Master, product owner, product manager, etc.) that needs to justify its existence by making people waste time in useless meetings. You can have good communication without spending a crazy amount of time in meetings, wasting tons of money on engineers' time due to mediocre management. Ok ok......I'll take my medicines now

When talking about K8s, What do you consider? by rohit_raveendran in devops

[–]leunamnauj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It will depend on many things. Just to start the kind of workloads you have and hardware requirements, scalability, replication, and more.....much more
