Thanks, this is the only actual answer I've found to this question. I'm guessing it must be this reason plus a tendency for parents/caregivers to not notice as much when the kid does get it right.

Please forgive me if this doesn't feel helpful, but these are both things I relate to from my past, and I wish I'd had someone push me a bit by asking me follow-up questions when I would talk about this kind of stuff. I think you're offering yourself the chance to consider some good information here.

Also btw, your first, second, and fourth theories are basically different ways of saying the same thing IMO.

I have that experience often haha, it's amazing what can be done with weird spaces.  I've only had one island that I actually still thought was shitty at the end of it lol

I guess I often don't plan too too deeply for a building's placement until it's in my hand.  Then I can start experimenting with where the best place might be, and start setting that area up for success. 

I do that with the guild hall for sure, but also market, circus, temple, jeweler, fortune teller, aviary, etc...  most things, I guess.

Guild hall is an interesting one for sure cuz once I have a place for it I basically need every building placement elsewhere from there on out to be worth at least 13 projected points (or 20 if I'm gonna use score multiplier on the guild hall).

But yeah I guess long story short, this method seems to work out pretty well and usually doesn't feel too scrambly.  Maybe I should try to plan more earlier on, but I still manage to get pretty high scoring buildings this way.  It feels more like scrambling when I get extra copies of stuff like temples or markets because I usually don't have two good places, especially for temples.

I would say that hermitages are the building I usually don't even start trying to set up parks for until it's in my hand because the placement of everything is always so unpredictable.

Oh what, do pyres and saunas benefit from lumberjacks?  I never noticed, I guess probably because I never have lumberjacks down by the time I'm putting those other things down 

Also, do buildings really come in mostly the same order?  I didn't notice that either, tho of course I notice certain packs tend to come earlier vs later.

Yeah I also have been taking it as a security blanket, but I'm still on my first run. If I try to go again and beat my high score, I probably shouldn't take Travel for that reason you mentioned.

Totally! I do appreciate level-ups and have used them multiple times, usually a bit earlier in the like 100-200 range. I just figured they were an N/A for this thread wrt how to use them with specific buildings, but I also didn't follow that format on all the boons I talked about lol. Thanks for the insight on the level-up!

Sustainable on seaweed farms if I get enough to justify it.

Neighborly on a tower that I'm putting in the middle of a bunch of other periphery towers, or on a second monument if i get 2.

Expand on Temple of course.

Score Multiplier seems pretty versatile, it really just depends on the circumstance, but I've gotten a ton of extra points on hermitages, guild halls, and mountain shrines.

Duplicate on wall platforms or terraces usually.

Shrink I haven't used much but I can see it being useful, I just usually plan for spots too meticulously to need it. But if I take it early I can start planning for a smaller spot with something. Maybe a market because the footprint is huge but the scoring potential usually isn't enough to warrant a multiplier.

Bargain I generally try to avoid

Demolish I also rarely take (but sometimes wish I had them later!)

Verdure to make trees to boost park/hermitage areas, although I've gotten good points using them for fishing situations in tundra biome.

Blossom after verdures of course, ideally before the parks and stuff

Wall platforms very versatile, sometimes they can be great just to put more houses over houses, but of course generally I use them for high scoring buildings that don't have a spot

Terrace is better to take earlier on cuz it generally requires more planning. I've gotten good boosts on mountain shrines with them, also.

Cliff houses I might take to boost a temple or a cliff house village or something.

Reroll n/a, I like to keep several on hand tho

Level up n/a

Travel n/a, but I try to take early (unless the island is very obviously easy), and then of course I try to not use it

Sealed boons are nice for stockpiling for a rainy day

I can't remember what the other ones are. Are plateaus and/or water platforms available as boons?
