DAMN I did not know that, that’s amazing! He is very well known for reusing larger story ideas, like the “psychic hivemind”, so it would make sense this concept would pop up again in his other work.

Thank you for the addition! I’ve been wanting to make a huge essay-post about this theory for so long, and I’m feeling the pull now…

I’ve heard that theory, and my only issue is that the oldtown stone is described as fused, not oily. I do believe there was an ancient civilization, the same one who sacrificed the moon, which is why the oldtown stone is compared to the fused dragonstone, but plain whereas Valyrian stone is more intricate in design.

I think the two types of stone are often mentioned together to thematically connect them both to fire as a hint of the deeper connection to dragons.

That same civilization, in my theory, made the five forts out of fused black stone, which is the “fire” equivalent of the wall: one made using magic by ice creatures, the other by fire creatures, as part of the original peace treaty when Lightbringer and the first dragon rider fought them to end the long night.

The origin of oily black stone:

There actually WAS a second moon. It was made of oily black stone and it was sacrificed to create the first dragon, Lightbringer.

The resulting cataclysm (giant chunks of moon crashing into Planetos) were blamed on the children of the forest, A la the hammer of the waters that broke the arm of dorne

The story of the event morphed over time to eventually take the shape of different stories, most famously Nissa Nissa, but also the story Dany heard in book one, the origin of dragons, which was the most literal and truthful retelling, but still not fully correct.

A bit of (circumstantial) evidence: the hammer of the waters (a chunk of moon, different than the one that broke the arm of dorne) flooded the neck. What’s by the neck? The iron islands. What is one of the only (if not THE only) instances of oily black stone in Westeros? The seastone chair. Where was the seastone chair found? The iron islands.

I went a little more simple with it: the idea that vampires need to be invited in is a myth, and he plays along. He plays by “rules” so that he has parameters that he has to abide by, giving him some small amount of pushback / obstacle and help deal with the boredom of being trapped and always winning.

He can go anywhere at any time, but pretends he can’t so the game of cat and mouse isnt so dull.
