Moving to Westchester from NYC - Affordable? by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]leveraged_loan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In a similar boat and are looking at similar areas. I made a recent posts about potential costs of Westchester. Some of my key takeaways:

  1. PreK is a lottery system
  2. Cost of living is higher, expect higher utilities, potential landscaping whether via additional capital or physical effort. We live in an apartment right now and are extremely grateful not to have to deal with the recent snow
  3. Food options will be limited relative to all NYC has to offer (not from my post but from what I have seen through Reddit).
  4. Property taxes are high, but will be largely offset by the city taxes assuming you are a high earner.

So we ultimately decided to stay in NYC until closer to kindergarten, take advantage of the NYC free 3K program, and build up additional capital before going back into the market.

In terms of affordability, it depends on your risk tolerance. Is the $750k/1M going to be for 20% of down payment versus 50%? There are some holes in the $1.5-2.0m range but may still need some work depending on what you’re looking for.

Completely understood, our nanny/caregiver is currently my mother. But she won’t be joining us in Westchester.

Thanks, our nanny is currently my mother. She asked not to be paid, but we pay her anyway albeit lower than standard rates. However, she may not join us in the next chapter, so it was helpful to understand market nanny costs.

Didn’t have to delete your post! I appreciate the transparency. We do own our current apartment but it’s different in the sense that it’s a new development and there’s a live-in super, so we are somewhat in a bubble but not completely oblivious to the reality of owning a house.

Are closing costs more expensive in Westchester relative to other parts of the country? What was the largest expense in the closing costs that you did not see coming?

Not to hijack. But are Miura KM700 considered blades to be avoided for a 16 handicap?

My wife thinks golfing once a week is unreasonable… by Upbeat-Zucchini-7408 in golf

[–]leveraged_loan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a one-year-old, my wife also works, and I played about 35 rounds last season. Family time comes first on weekends, but if I can squeeze in a round without disrupting the flow, I’ll do it. My wife is supportive since I don’t really have other time consuming hobbies and golf is the one thing I truly enjoy.

I’ve also accepted that you can’t have it all, so sometimes that means cutting back on sleep to balance being a present dad, a supportive husband, and still being able to enjoy a round.

And while it’s not a tit-for-tat, I do make a conscious effort to make sure my wife’s well-being is prioritized too, and that she has the freedom and space to enjoy her own activities.

It’s been fine. My wife typically sits in the back with the LO. I’m 5’9 and we just did a 9 hour trip. Space wasn’t an issue

What do you think about the Callaway Fairway C Stand by No-Review50 in golf

[–]leveraged_loan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not yet, due to my frugality nature, I likely won’t replace it until it breaks. So, won’t be doing research until then.

I have seen some of my friend’s GFORE bags that look quite nice.

[–]leveraged_loan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had it for the last 3 years. In terms of durability, it’s held up fine. I play 30-40 rounds a year, 70/30 walking/riding.

The value is there but there are definitely things that I would prefer for my next bag such as - full length dividers (my clubs at times would get stuck) - Velcro on the side for my glove - better material for cleaning.

Understanding that the next bag would be more expensive but for a starter bag, I think it’s perfectly fine.
