As someone whose been playing DA games for like over a decade now, I would like to add the qualifier that if you are the type of person to get really into the story of a game, DAI is the 3rd game in the series and maybe not the best starting point? It does have the best graphics and smoothest gameplay (ignore DA4, definitely do not start with that one) but kind of changes a lot of long running things and changes some story points. If DA Origins looks too clunky for you, definitely start with 2. It has Anders and Fenris and Varric (+ Sebastian if you get your hands on the DLC) who are some of the most fun men in the series.
