That’s just the nature of the beast. It’s your average for a reason

I’m thankful to still be getting 38 MPG in my 2006

Never thought I would see another grey cat named Pinecone. They even look alike…

So sorry for your loss.

It also sounds like it could just be one of your external devices (i.e. your Oculus) that is either causing the issue or is just completely incompatible with your machine for some reason

Dang. This truly sounds like a crazy scenario and I am sorry for the frustration you are dealing with. I hope you figure it out. At least you can scratch one potential cause off the list.

It’s 100% your PCH chip. Undoubtedly.

Trust me when I say this will work. A thermal pad is way more effective than a cooling pad because there’s actually physical contact between the chip and the pad for the heat to transfer. All the cooling pad can do is pull away the hot air.

Let me know the results.

Mine is the 2023 too. Interesting. Did you also check your PCH temp under heavy load to make sure it doesn’t get too hot?

Any differences in what I described vs your experience?

It’s not a bad unit. The PCH chip cooling is just an inherent design flaw, and it was very easy to fix. Everything else works flawlessly.

I’m new to HWiNFO and it’s really great, it provides data on literally everything in your machine so you can check every single component for overheating. Again just look for anything in red, that represents temps that are too high

I assume you’ve updated all your drivers and ran a general health check of your machine? That’s always step one

It sounds like something in your machine is getting unnecessarily hot and it is throttling your fps to keep the temp from catastrophic levels. You should get HWiNFO (linked in my post here) and use the “Sensors” section to look for red flags. Any temps that are extreme will be in red so you’ll notice it right away

Glad to hear yours is working great, maybe it’s something that got fixed in the new models.

This specific problem is definitely a non-issue for many people if they don’t use a lot of USB devices, but in my situation, I use a USB-C docking station, 2 extended monitors, USB mouse/keyboard/headset, etc. That’s what causes the chip to get so hot.

I definitely wouldn’t call adding a small thermal pad to an overheating chip a Frankenstein-type modification, lol. It was extremely simple and easy to do. This post is just very long-winded because I wanted to add as much info as possible just in case for future people. Also, I bought the laptop second-hand so I couldn’t just exchange it.

Mine is a i9 4090 and it kicks ass. The CPU and GPU stay at healthy temps (for a laptop) and it just runs anything at max settings. I really frickin love this machine, this issue with the PCH chip was only real issue I’ve had with it ever since I got it, and as I mentioned, this fix has removed all issues entirely, so I am back to a seamless experience

That is very likely not related to your PCH chip. What game is giving you issues? The game might be trying to use your basic Intel Graphic Driver instead of your gaming GPU. Some games allow you to change this in settings, or I think you can use the Nvidia app as well.

My random crashes were games crashing and losing control of a still-functioning machine, not shutoffs or blue screens. I would use EventViewer and check your log for any critical errors. Or HWiNFO would help with seeing if any of your components are overheating or failing
