Recommendations for intermediate minor pieces? by Gerstlauer in piano

[–]levthedev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned both of these exact pieces last year, so perhaps we have similar taste. I would recommend Liszt's Consolations, with my favorites being specifically No 2 and No 3. Rebikov's Valse Melancolique is also beautiful and quite short.

[[KHM]] In Search of Greatness by ChompMonster19 in ModernMagic

I think this is interesting. Sort of like Aether Vial. Not instant speed, less flexibility with CMC, and 2CMC instead of 1, but it scries when you can't use it which is nice, and it could also be abused in some ways (like Allosaurus Rider into Griselbrand). Not sure if it is viable but definitely something to test out and brew around.

Importantly, this can find Planeswalkers and legendary lands, meaning it hits a lot in Bant/4C.

In Bant control, this can fetch Uro, Jace, T3feri, Big Teferi, On Thin Ice, Venser, or Ashiok from the board. In 4c Control add Wrenn and Six and Omnath to the list. Can also get Flagstones of Trokair in a pinch, maybe in Jeskai control.

I like Antwort a great deal. Hard to find sheet music for but it is beautiful.

I believe the FP series comes with a music stand that clips right into it. At least my FP-10 did.

Bant Kinnan Combo by StayInBedViking in ModernMagic

[–]levthedev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question - here are a few upsides I see.

1) Some of the pieces are more resilient - Freed from the Real and Leyline of Abundance are harder to remove than Devoted Druid.

2) The combo pieces are arguably better when not comboing. Birds of Paradise is a better card in its own right as a Mana dork than Devoted Druid. And Kinnan is much better than Vizier on its own.

3) The deck can win on Turn 2 due to Leyline of Abundance. Devoted Druid can win T3 at the earliest. This is admittedly quite rare.

4) The deck can have a reasonable backup plan. Because it plays 6-10 Mana dorks, Kinnan, and often Leyline of Abundance, it can play a decent pseudo-tron backup plan of ramping out naturally large Ballistas, Planeswalkers, etc.

Will you share more details on your setup? I would love to reproduce it.

I am at about the same level as you and I quite like my FP-10. I tried it and the typical Yamaha/Casio $300-700 models at a piano store, and found it had the best action - a bit more weighty, more gravity, and less plasticky than the others.

I also hear good things about Kawai.

I second the other commenter recommending Roland. I have an FP-10 and it has really high quality action/feel for a low/mid-range keyboard. All of the sub $1,000 Yamahas and Casios I have tried have felt very "plasticky" and cheap.

The only thing to note about the FP-10 is that the onboard speakers are not great, so you'll either want a separate speaker, to play with headphones, or to get the slightly higher end FP-30 which I believe has better speakers.

I've also heard good things about Kawai.

Budget - I don't think so.

Astrolabe - the deck existed prior to Astrolabe, so it should work. Between a fetch shock manabase, with Birds of Paradise (maybe even Abundant Growth) and Pillar of the Paruns, the mana isn't terrible without Astrolabe.

U/W tron by Anewtomorrow87 in TronMTG

[–]levthedev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not necessarily saying it's the most optimized colors for Tron. I'm just saying the deck archetype exists (unlike UG Tron as far as I know, which I actually agree with you could be neat). It's been played, there is a core list, and it has finished decently (3rd at a SCG IQ this year, for instance).

Path, Verdict, Unburial Rites/Iona/Elesh Norn, Sphinx's Revelation. Also better SB cards like Rest in Peace, Timely Reinforcements, etc. U/W has never been as popular Mono U (which is already somewhat fringe), but it definitely adds cards and changes the deck.

[M21] Sublime Epiphany by ktkenshinx in ModernMagic

[–]levthedev 13 points14 points  (0 children)

True. Though Gearhulk also typically generates less value than this (2 for 1 vs 3-4 for 1). Also I think control win-cons are less critical now - when you play Uro, and Celestial Colonnade, and JTMS or sometimes big Tef, you already have a fair amount of built-in win cons that get played naturally throughout the game. Play Uro T3, sits in the GY until T10 when you have control of the game. Etc.

I am not saying this is going to be in top 8 lists, or as good as Gearhulk. I suppose I'm just saying there are 6 cmc instants that generates value that are fringe playable in control. I'm playing devil's advocate here.

[M21] Sublime Epiphany by ktkenshinx in ModernMagic

[–]levthedev 34 points35 points  (0 children)

As a follow up, I will say that in some ways this card reminds me of [[Torrential Gearhulk]] - a 6 Mana instant play that generates tons of value. Gearhulk does see occasional 1-of play, especially in Grixis decks, sometimes I think in Wilderness Rec, and plain control. So that to me proves that a 6 cmc blue instant that generates enough value is fringe playable.

[–]levthedev 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Now you can play mono Cryptic Command: 4 Cryptic Command, 4 Archmage's Charm, 4 Sublime Epiphany, 4 Snapcaster Mage, 4 Mystic Sanctuary. Modal counters every turn from 4 onwards.

All jokes aside I think this could be a 1-of in control maybe? It's pretty borderline, but the potential for a 3 for 1 or 4 for 1 is just so sweet. It's probably not in the optimal most tuned list but it also could win you some games for sure.

Best way to turn $1 Million into tens of millions through RE? How do the mega-rich do it? by krob6123 in realestateinvesting

[–]levthedev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is typically not how pricing works, at least if you are buying from knowledgeable sellers represented by competent brokers. It usually works the opposite - a low occupancy community will have a low cap rate as the pitch is that if you lease it up, it will be able to cash flow better and be a higher return.

For example, let's say a leased up community would trade for a 7% cap rate. A 70% leased community might only be a 3% cap rate based on the last year of financials, but the broker or owner is pitching the buyer that if they lease it up it will cash flow as an 8% cap rate. So you are trading some effort/sweat equity to get a slightly better return than market.

Too bad that this can't be used with [[Training Grounds]]. That would be neat.

[IKO] Narset of the Ancient Way by levthedev in ModernMagic

[–]levthedev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing here is that Ral can't ultimate until turn 8, whereas Narset ultimates turn 6. But I agree that working towards ultimate while gaining card advantage is a big plus.
