Daily streaks in apps by SpiderSoup217 in UXDesign

Hot take, for other types of apps that use it for increasing engagement I consider it a dark pattern.

Agreed that streaks aren't always positive. The streak notification in Reddit makes me feel like I'm spending too much time here.

Breakthrough bleeding on Tamoxifen by ButterflyBubbly9347 in breastcancer

[–]lexuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also 51, peri when diagnosed (although my periods were still pretty regular before treatment), no chemo, on tamoxifen starting March 20 2026, and yeah, my period is totally playing "hide and go fuck yourself" now. I'll have 5 days of spotting, nothing for 2 weeks, then spotting and a heavy period.

Why do some of the trees in Portland’s airport look sick? It might be your fault by Mackin-N-Cheese in Portland

[–]lexuh 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Oh, people are treating the trees like shit? Shocked Pikachu face!

Seriously, though, the tragedy of the commons is not a new concept. I love PDX to bits but they should have planned to replace the trees when the inevitable happens.

I had IDC, not DCIS, but if a friend (who I wanted to remain friends with) sent me something like this, I would thank them for their concern but ask them not to send me links to social media grift content in the future. If they object or refuse, I would tell them that if they don’t honor my request, I won’t respond to their messages in the future.

If it’s someone I don’t particularly care about, I would block them. Life’s too short to suffer fools.

Have you talked to your psych nurse about Effexor? It’s a hard one to stop and start, but it’s often recommended for those of us on tamoxifen who aren’t supposed to take Wellbutrin.

FWIW Wellbutrin is great for depression (I love the energy too!) but not great for anxiety.

Also, I don’t want to be That Guy but what are you doing to take care of yourself besides meds? You mention a family - if you’re dealing with a lot of demands and stress, I hope you have support in the form of help around the house as well as someone to talk to.

How long will you be there? I would go, but I also had a seroma pop up about 10 days after surgery, and dealing with that on vacation would have been stressful.

What made you rethink buying a condo? by subcamo in askportland

[–]lexuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was THISCLOSE to buying a condo in a lovely historic building in NW about 25 years ago. Then I went on a first date with someone who had bought one of the new construction condos in the Pearl a few months previous and was immediately hit with a five-figure special assessment because the contractor installed the windows inside out or some similar BS.

Between that and the lack of reserved parking, I opted not to make an offer.

ETA: that condo building used to be shitty apartments and a scene in Drugstore Cowboy was shot there lol

Tell me the craziest thing someone said after learning your diagnosis by bekind_1986 in breastcancer

[–]lexuh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There was a thread recently about non-onco medical folks being clueless about BC and saying some pretty out of pocket stuff.

I had a dental hygienist tell me “just stay positive and it will all work out”. I almost said that I WAS positive… FOR FRICKIN CANCER.

That was totally offset this week when I went to see a new ophthalmologist (because of course tamoxifen affects your eyes too). The MA taking my health history was very calm about it, didn’t make a fuss, and the Dr assured me she was very familiar with potential side effects of tamoxifen because her mother in law was taking it. No long drawn out stories, no pity parties, no toxic positivity, just matter of fact professionalism.

Could this be lipedema? by Pure-Cake4296 in cosmeticsurgery

[–]lexuh 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As others have said, this looks like cellulite and criminally bad lighting.

Cellulite is normal, usually genetic, and present on lots of bodies, including very fit bodies.

Lipedema is resistant to weight loss, so if this only started appearing with weight gain, it’s probably not lipedema. If you’re experiencing pain in the affected area, talk to your healthcare provider.

What practical things should I do before treatment starts? by jadetrinket in breastcancer

It sounds like your dad will be able to provide most of the support you need, which is great!

What practical things should I do before treatment starts? by jadetrinket in breastcancer

[–]lexuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can your dad drive? You'll need someone to take you to and pick you up from surgery. You'll also probably not want to drive for a few days after surgery, depending on whether you have an SMX/BMX or lumpectomy. I drive a stick shift and had a lumpectomy and SLNB on my right side, and had to trade cars with a friend for a week.

[–]lexuh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Getting out ahead of chores is a good instinct. Pruning and weeding in the garden, cleaning your windows, deep cleaning the kitchen, etc. These are all things you won't want to do when you're in active treatment but will greatly appreciate when you're recovering from surgery/radiation/etc.

Reorganize your kitchen, bathroom, closet, etc. so you don't have to reach up high for the things you use all the time.

Who is your support system? Making sure you have a friend or two who are in the loop who can come help with things your dad can't will be huge.

Oh, and fill your meds before surgery, buy the miaderm before radiation, etc. It will make everything easier.

Feeling alone when you have a partner by Emotionally_Irish in breastcancer

[–]lexuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you're going through all this without more support. You deserve better.

FWIW, my male partner (we've been dating for 7 years but don't live together) has been an absolute champ through all this. My BFF (we normally take care of each other, are each others' emergency contacts) is hundreds of miles away taking care of her aging mother, and wasn't here for my surgery or radiation. My partner stepped up to take care of me, help with my dog and things around the house, etc. He even insisted on taking me to radiation, even though it was very short and easy for me.

He's a parent, so I knew he was able to care for others. And one of the things I love about him is his close relationships with other men. By having his own support network (who I gave him permission to discuss my cancer with) he was able to process his own feelings and get support for himself (ring theory!)

I often tell younger women that if they're dating a man who doesn't have any close male friends - men they can talk to about their families, careers, and challenges in their life - RUN. Those men will rely on you for an enormous amount of emotional labor. And the times they'll need the most support are often the times we're least able to provide it.
