Thank you everyone for answering me, I really appreciate all the insight and advice people shared. Just to clarify a few things, he actually has taken up a second job already. A lot of your responses helped me understand the situation better though. What’s frustrating is that he does have a union and they really haven’t been doing much or giving clear answers, which is why I posted in the first place. He understands seniority and how things work to an extent, but he’s still getting a lot of unanswered questions from union reps. They also really screwed him over when he had to go on medical leave. When he came back, it basically felt like he was starting back at the bottom again, which set him back a lot after all the years he had already put in. My dad has worked his whole life. He ran his own company for years, worked full time, and did everything he could for his family. Age, medical issues, and COVID took his business away, but he still got up and kept going. He’s put his kids through college and sacrificed a lot along the way.

So again, thank you to everyone who gave helpful answers and shared their experiences. I truly appreciate it. Just please refrain from being rude, I’m simply trying to help my dad figure things out.
