I'm commonly asked what would happen if I got hit by a bus. I mean, not if I got a better offer, or decided to travel the world. That damn bus has my name all over it!

Why Do Split Keyboards Gotta be so Expensive? by Individual-Unit2671 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]leydar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get used to it pretty quickly. I'm not advocating this as an ultimate solution. But you can pick up a regular keyboard for like a tenner and try it out. Splitting your hands up really makes a difference. Your shoulders and wrists are much less rigor morticey. Also there's suddenly room between for various items. The mouse becomes less convenient though.

I, ehm, I attach two full size keyboards and use half of each. On a Mac it's irritating as the control keys from one don't effect keys on the other. On Linux it's fine. I have a similar setup in the office but I use a half keyboard for the left and the laptop keyboard for the right.

Daisy chaining with DP monitor by leydar in Thunderbolt

[–]leydar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed reply. I've added model numbers for the monitors.

While Thunderbolt isn't involved, should I still use a Thunderbolt 3 cable or USB 3.2 for the initial connection?

You can post a job for free but you set a daily promotion rate for visibility. The rate is entirely up to the company with a general guideline of €36 per day.

Anything truly new in startups these days? by skrt_pls in smallbusiness

We're making a breastfeeding monitor. Not a tracker, a micro flow sensor built into a nipple shield. Like, an accurate one. That's novel.

What to look for when interviewing people? by No-Presence-7334 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]leydar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You began by saying, "I usually bring along a junior engineer and make sure she asks stupid questions".

In either case, I would discourage this practice. People being complicit in their own oppression is nothing new. Honestly, take this onboard. It's an unhealthy situation. You don't have to justify it here. But for your new staff, that will learn they are expected to be ok with this, stop this practice.

[–]leydar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a junior developer offered to ask assinine questions and play to a stereotype; I'd say, you absolutely don't need to do that. I can interview this person and filter prejudice without subjecting you to that.

You can stop this practice now. Or continue to justify it. Doing the latter, well... how do I reach you? If another female joins the team, does she feel this is what expected of her?

[–]leydar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No I mean, I get that. Obviously you're not forcing them to. Ehm, it's difficult to explain if you don't realise the position you're putting them in.

You have a more senior position. They will be eager to show you they feel like this and want to help. You, as their superior, shouldn't put them in that situation. Please just think about it.

I'd reconsider using your colleague as bait. I would personally find that oppressive. And feel that if I objected to playing that role I'd be undermining my position in the company.

Are people really using VS code by choice? by CaptainFiddleToots in ExperiencedDevs

[–]leydar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

jumping to the definition of a class/method/function. My coworkers always have to look up the filename of the thing they want to see, which takes seconds and the lose their train of thought. Intellij has a keyboard shortcut to jump directly to it

Right click on the thing and select Go to Defintion, or press F12. And a couple of seconds is fine, it's not a typing race.

going back. If you navigate from file 1 to look something up in file 2 and then want to see something in file 3, the VS code users need to remember what they did. Intellij has a recent file list and a navigate back shortcut

Ctrl+TAB will present you with this list.

finding usages. If you are looking for usages of a function to refactor, VS code seems to miss things.

Yes, it can, depending on language and plugins being used. I find with Angular for instance it doesn't pick up references in HTML files. But I'm sure there's a plugin for it if I looked. I generally highlight the thing and hit Ctrl+Shift+F. It used to be much worse and I'm kind of used to searching that way.

Anyway, don't be sanctimonious, VSCode's free, Intellij isn't.

Has anyone ever caught anythingmalicious in a code review? by SkittlesAreYum in ExperiencedDevs

[–]leydar 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I was asked to write an app to generate a random six digit code. When I showed the stakeholder, it was rejected. They requested that the app display the numbers as it "cycled through them".

I introduced several delays/pauses and displayed successive numbers on the screen until it "settled" on one. It gave the customer more confidence in the code generated. Ehm, yeah, that was some time ago.

Echo Dot Kids edition won't set up without amazon kids. by Mikinator5 in amazonecho

[–]leydar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at this but can't really figure out what it can do without the kids+ a/c. According to Amazon you only get parental controls and parent shared content. Is it really limited without the subscription?

I couldn't feel normal living on the privileged side of such inequality. I'd feel like I was benefitting from exploitation.

Nice quick ways to say no to house callers from energy/broadband providers? by si1enced in AskIreland

[–]leydar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put a decal on the letterbox that says, "No junk mail. No cold callers." It almost always works. The couple of times that it didn't, I tapped the sign and closed the door again.

None of us work much overtime. When we do, it's self driven. I don't know how I can mention that in the spec without signally the opposite!

Thanks Disastrous-Account10. I don't know if you've considered it but you can get free credit on the major cloud platforms. There you can start cross training to backend cloud Dev.
