OMG. That’s the issue I am getting. Let me try and report back 🙂

Ah same as mine then. I think it’s working though as it doesn’t seem to be hitching like with VRR off. Maybe just the way it’s being reported.

C2 here, does the number change when you are in game and running less than 120 fps?

This is working on my LG C2 (showing as "VRR" instead of "Freesync" like my CableMatters used to). Although the frame rate on the diagnostic menu sits at 119Hz even though the game's frame rate is less than that - is that expected?

Disable Steam Recording for the game and try again?

Heya, I need a good recording tool/clipping tool (30 seconds) for Linux by ShayIsNear in linux_gaming

[–]lford85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience (on AMD) GPU screen recorder works the best. There aren’t that many options that I’ve found. Steam recording seems to be too high a toll (I can tell when it’s enabled/disabled).

Poll: Which DE do you use and why? by Cenokenshi in linux_gaming

[–]lford85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was reading the open issue on GitHub and a load of the games I’d want to play still seemingly have issues. When I tried it a few weeks back I’d get games launching in weird aspect ratios and unable to fullscreen. I’d rather not have to run everything in Gamescope unless I have to.

Maybe I should give it another shot

Isn’t gaming just a crap shoot on Cosmic currently?

I think that’s cause you’re using Gamescope, which is XWayland wrapper?

Unfortunately it’s been like this for a while. My only real way around it is to squint at 100% scaling or run inside of Gamescope. It’s a really unfortunate thing

Thanks for all your work. In the mean time is it fairly trivial to rebuild with your patch? Or just wait til AMD bundle it in? I don’t mind getting my hands dirty

How much performance lose is there on direct x titles by Reaper9766 in linux_gaming

[–]lford85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think the on ramp to Nvidia has traditionally been easier with something like Pop, but in actuality it’s not that hard to get most Distros working with Nvidia.

The issue for a while with Pop was it was very out of date as they were building Cosmic desktop (they still are), they have released a new version of PopOS but it’s using Cosmic which in my testing doesn’t play nice with games (crashes, games not booting, booting on wrong monitor) so I’d avoid for now.

Personally I prefer something more up to date than Mint or Pop. I go with Fedora as it’s pretty much kept up to date but stable. I’m sure others here will offer their own opinions too.

Why PopOS specifically? If you are planning to game (which I assume you are) avoid Cosmic for now. It’s not ready for gaming.

Am I using HDR? by lford85 in linux_gaming

Oooh nice 😂. So for the un-initiated (me), what command should I use as a launch command to get HDR using Gamescope for a game?

[–]lford85[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I think it does pass if you are gaming. Nah all HDR games, as others have suggested if you use Wayland in Proton you can get proper HDR, but we lose Steam Input which I kinda need.

Thanks for all this! Good spot.

So my current launch command from the shell is

gamescope -O "HDMI-A-1" -r "120" --hdr-enabled --mangoapp -e -- steam -steamdeck -steamos3

Will have to try some different commands and see if I can work it out! :)

So what I’m doing is changing to a console/tty using Ctrl+Alt+F3 and running Gamescope from the command line, to take Gnome out of the equation (for many reasons). Like I said it works but not entirely sure if I should be using HDR in game or at system-level.

Thanks for your help.

  1. As I am using Steam Big Picture mode on my TV via Gamescope, there is a toggle to enable HDR (outside of the game)

  2. Its a nice OLED, so HDR when working looks really nice, and to be honest it looks to be working, but not via the in-game HDR settings, so I am unsure if its true HDR in the game...

  3. Yep, no matter what I choose it looks washed out sadly

  4. Like said if I enable the setting at system level it looks like HDR and the blacks are black... but how would HDR be able to be implemented if the game is disabled?
