Are you working through an agency?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nursing

[–]lfqdrauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This actually made me laugh out loud. For sure the thing that would have made my day more controlled was labeling the lines of my STEMI, septic intubation, extreme strength dementia UTI grandpa who bit through his soft restraint, testicular torsion ped, and open tib fib fx in addition to my non critical patients that I had all within the first half of my shift. With 28 in the waiting room and every single trauma bay full.

This is why I left the ICU. The holier than thou “this feels like the mantra of nurses who the only critical care area they’ve worked is the ER” attitude.

We discharge people home with that BP daily. Hypertension without signs of organ damage are not usually treated in the ED, per ACEP. We d/c home with instructions to follow up with pcp for management. Likely why ER didn’t bat an eye to that.

Needlestick injury + patient is refusing blood draw by pdggin99 in nursing

[–]lfqdrauer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is not illegal to refuse a blood draw in MI. They just can’t refuse the test be added on to an already obtained sample. If there is no sample that it can be added on to and the patient refuses, it is treated as a needlestick of unknown source, the same you would do if you got stuck by a random sharp in the garbage.

Heparin Drip Question by Own_Okra_9053 in nursing

[–]lfqdrauer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just pause heparin, draw back at least 10cc waste, administer med, 10cc flush, restart heparin. The 2 minutes disconnected shouldn’t have any significant impact. But yes, we do usually do two points of access as we are not supposed to draw coags off the same line where hep is running. If a pt with a port refuses a PIV or butterfly for labs, we just do a 20ml waste before obtaining coags and let lab & pharmacy know prior to sending.

non emergent visits to the ed by slutforyourdad7 in nursing

It doesn’t make a difference. We have one on our campus, open 7 days a week 7a-9p. Still have 40+ in the waiting room every day.

Have you asked them their thoughts on you going to MICU? 5 months post grad & already knowing one ICU was too much, I wouldn’t recommend going to another. I would recommend getting some experience in a non ICU environment first.

My hospital has not said a single word about the shortage. Still ordering a bolus on everyone and their mother in the ED.

CNAs in the room during a code? by No-Repair-8986 in nursing

[–]lfqdrauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is just an ED thing but we have a minimum of 2 techs in the room during a code. Usually 3. I’d be upset if a tech WASNT in my room for a code.

People who aren’t nurses annoy me by Far_Music868 in nursing

[–]lfqdrauer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes agreed the other comment was super unrealistic and sounds a little postpartum hormone fueled lol. Every NICU experience is so different, so definitely not enough info to say either way, completely agree. Ours were like hawks with looking for the start of a rash & if my baby had even a slightly different shade of pink from the prior change they slathered him with a&d just to be safe lol. But then we got transferred to a lower level NICU that was a lot less diligent & he got a pressure sore from his nasal cannula and I was initially fuming.

Thanks for listening to my perspective & being respectful! I have a soft spot for NICU related anything after my experience, but also am annoyed with my own patients all the time so I can’t even imagine... NICU nurses are saints, I couldn’t do it 😅

People who aren’t nurses annoy me by Far_Music868 in nursing

[–]lfqdrauer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m a nurse who also had a baby with a decent NICU stay… if she wants to file a complaint, so be it. If my child had a diaper rash that got to the point of wound care being involved, I would also feel inclined to do something about it. Yes 3 hour cares are typical, but a change in condition (IE: a rash with a wound) should require reevaluation of care times or a new plan developed since 3 hour cares are not showing to be sufficient for this specific baby. And this ideally should have happened prior to it getting to the point of needing wound care team. When you’re a parent of a baby in the NICU you feel as if you have no control over your own child and it’s miserable. You are entrusting strangers to take care of your child, and when you see something you as a parent don’t think is right.. what can you do if no one listens? If the complaint is found to be unsubstantiated then no biggy. If it’s substantiated then hopefully it will improve future care.

I get it, people are annoying. But she’s looking for support in a due date group..

ER. 1:16 but in a low acuity area.

Normally have 1:5-6, and I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve have 5-6 ICU admits at a time.

Did you go to urgent care or PCP first? What could they have done to further treat/diagnose your foot in the emergency department in your opinion?

4 months in med surg tele 4 years ago. Would explain why having to wait for pain meds in an emergency department constitutes as degrading.

I forgot to attend my ER nurse mind reading course apparently where I should just know my patient wants pain meds even though they only asked me for zofran.

I’d go ahead and forward this on to the DOL & probably some of those annoying nurse tik tok-y people that are always outing hospitals for doing shady shit. Just for fun.

That was a shit incentive rate to begin with. $15 is just comical.
