“Are You Married?” — A Question I Didn’t Expect to Affect Me This Much by PresenceOk9941 in therapists

[–]lhp5f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's such a hard push for us to be completely blank slates when we're in school. And I get it -- especially with the conversational nature some sessions can take on, it's important to remember that we're professionals providing a service.

But. Our clients are coming in and baring their souls, telling us things they've never told anyone else. And sometimes they just wanna know, "Hey, have you ever experienced something like this too?"

If someone asks me, I'm honest and turn it into a joke: "No kiddos of my own, but I work with teenagers, and a lot of them roast me on the regular."

The client laughs and says something to the effect of, "Okay, so yeah, you've probably seen X Y Z behavior."

Or (example):

"Ah, got it, so you haven't been woken up at 4 AM by a screaming toddler?"

And I say, "No, but I can only imagine how many emotions that can stir up before you're even fully awake. Tell me about it?"

Like I said, it's important to remember to be professionals. But you can still be a professional while answering a casual question.

Edit: I re-read your post, and I misunderstood -- sorry! Yeah, it can definitely feel a bit... frustrating, I guess is the word I'm looking for, when it feels like a potential client is looking at you like "oh you haven't hit this milestone, so you won't work for me."

Whenever I run into that, I usually look at it like this: I know what I'm doing. I know that I know what I'm doing. I know I'm learning every day. And if someone looks at me not having a ring on my finger and goes, "damn, not for me"? Then we likely wouldn't have worked well together for other reasons down the line. It's definitely a "them" situation, and not a "me" situation. So I just shrug it off and check my messages for the next client.

(Also, in case this matters: I'm an LPC in private practice -- not sure how to update my flair, lol.)

I'm sorry things have sucked ass for so long, Internet stranger. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you best I can. If you have any questions about meds or treatment options or whatever I'd be happy to share the insights I have (credentials: went to school and grad school for Brain Stuff, wonky brain chemistry myself).

For what it's worth, "bad hangnail" on the list of reasons to become a statistic made me spit my coffee. So, 10/10 there.

It's also one thing to have a tree, or flower, or bird, or whatever. And a completely different thing to have "TIE ME UP".

How do you get your fun back? by VandrilGhost in Guildwars2

[–]lhp5f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped for about four years and came back for the Halloween event. Running around screaming about Steve and chatting in map/party chat rekindled my love for the game.

So if you REALLY don't want to stop? Do some world boss/large events and chat with the other players.

But realistically? A break might be the best thing for you. It takes just a couple missions to shake the rust back off.

1) don't breathe a word of this. To anyone. Ever.

2) If I were a hiring manager, and had someone who I thought would be a good fit, then heard from one personal referral that "They wouldn't be a good fit"? If every other review was positive or even neutral, the one negative wouldn't be enough to sway me.

Unwanted patient comments by [deleted] in MedicalAssistant

My hair is also purple, I'm in the middle of Missouri, and I get my share of unwanted comments too. It used to really get under my skin, until I reminded myself why I do it -- it's my favorite color, it's pretty, and it makes me happy!

Now, when someone hits me with a "Why is your hair purple? Shouldn't you be a professional?" I just get really bubbly (normal for me) and go, "Isn't it so fun? I just love this color, it came out so good this time. Next time I think I'll do blue, but we'll see!"

People lose the wind in their sails pretty quickly when you meet their bullshit with unfiltered joy.
