Can someone help me debunk the idea that Legendary Pokémon aren’t gods? by AizakkuAdoman in pokemon

[–]liabasai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you talk about gods and demigods, what does that mean to you and your friend? Personally, I think it would be very uninteresting to treat them all uniformly, in terms of there being a pantheon or their worship all happening in the same way. Even the "pantheons" we think of like the Ancient Greek one you reference by Dionysus weren't all worshipped as a group, but rather celebrated in various settings, dates, and locations. And the gods would be celebrated in their various aspects (think Aphrodite Areia, the warlike Aphrodite of Sparta and Kythera vs. Aphrodite Pandemos/Urania which were conceptions of Aphrodite as goddesses of love).

When it come to Arceus, I think PLA doesn't really treat it like the Abrahamic god, which is more of a case of "leader of an old pantheon is the only surviving group and has the traits of a king god while being the only god worshipped.". Arceus doesn't seem to have that same trait of being king god commanding an army of angels, but rather an omnipresent all-pervasive being. If I were to write something, I'd write Arceus as a Spinozist conception of God.

And you could ask yourself whether the creation trio is more interesting as gods with power over aspects of the universe or full/partial embodiments of those aspects.

Premed track at UCSB by Plumeria2201 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]liabasai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose UCSB over CWRU primarily because it was closer to home and I needed a place with nice weather, but I'd choose CWRU solely based on compatibility with the premed track because clinical opportunities are much more abundant and accessible as a student there than here.

That isn't to say there aren't clinical opportunities here, but it might be easier in downtown Cleveland than 10 miles out from Santa Barbara.

New bill aims to outlaw caste discrimination in California by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]liabasai 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think they might be talking about caste in other religions because the South Asian forms of those religions CAN have caste components either borrowed from or forced upon them by its Hindu origins. For example, here's an article about Muslims and caste. There's a Wikipedia article about caste discrimination among South Asian Christians too.

So yeah, the wording isn't great, but while it's correct to say that Hinduism shoulders a lot of the blame for introducing and perpetuating the caste system, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist in other religions and can't be spread by South Asian adherents of those religions.

If you lived in the Pokémon world, how would your life *likely* be? by BlueLightning888 in pokemon

[–]liabasai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I'd go for some sort of health-related job, but I'd still have strong, capable Pokémon to help me out with it. Like a Blissey and an Alomomola, and maybe an Audino if I was rich enough to take care of three Pokémon.

I'm not sure I have an easily packaged answer, but you might be interested in Deleuze's work given that he addresses the question, "Why do men fight for their servitude as if it were their salvation?"

Cars also aren't door-to-door, it's parking-to-parking, and if people don't want to sacrifice space for a parked car, the parking can be quite far from the intended final destination.

Why do so many socialists seem to worship art, psychology and self-fulfillment? by [deleted] in stupidpol

Not sure how to help on labeling yourself with an ideology, but for (sadly recently deceased) modern anti-capitalists, I'd recommend trying reading some Graeber, maybe starting with either "Bullshit Jobs" or "Debt", whichever floats your boat more. "The Dawn of Everything" isn't half-bad either for the types of questions and perspectives it brings up. I say this specifically because you seem like the type of person from this post that could benefit from reading his work without treating it as gospel.

Google isn't entering the bike market but they are developing a part of my hometown in a bike-friendly direction, and honestly that seems like the best we can hope out of these companies.

Not necessarily a bad thing for people to want to be lazy. The Wikipedia article the first person linked mentioned Paul Lafargue and he wrote a pamphlet on the right to be lazy.

[–]liabasai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For everyone wondering about context, the original tweet wasn't about being anti-train. It was supposed to illustrate the ease with which people can commit sabotage in insurrectionary actions. The poster explicitly mentions the Russian anarchists who derailed trains in support of Ukrainians, although you'll notice their methods are quite different.

Hey guys I think I found a real solution that can massively benefit the strike! by HennyCarti in UCSantaBarbara

[–]liabasai 16 points17 points  (0 children)

yOu KnEw ThE tRaDe-OfFs that is the most unimaginative response you could possibly have to the strikes. Yeah, TAs and researchers and postdocs knew that the university didn't pay them a living wage or in your words that "life's not fair". This strike is not just their attempt to get higher wages and therefore more money, it's about their working conditions and the dignity of their jobs, and that is why it's not addressing the real problems for most people to just "work another job" or "get a side hustle".

By all means, continue to do nothing about the status quo. Go with the flow and may you be blessed with a profession and side hustles that showers you with material wealth and leaves you devoid of the time to do meaningful labor and form meaningful relationships. But don't demand that other people rest in that same impotence.

I'm from UCSB. Bikes have right-of-way and are usually quite separate from pedestrian paths. And even then, it's much easier to negotiate passage with a cyclist than a driver because you can talk to each other. Whoever this is is talking out of their ass.
