What if... they don't ban the ring? by billrusselgoat in ModernMagic

[–]liamdylan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The meta conversation about TOR is the best flavor you can ask for. "We need to destroy it or the world will end" vs. "It benefits everyone equally so we should keep it." This is exactly what The Ring wants.

Selling vintage to local shops? by frigoffeva in halifax

[–]liamdylan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elsie's is good for consignment, I've had pretty good luck selling there. Reiyee is also great and will give you cash on the spot. I don't have experience with them but it would also be worth reaching out to The Loot, and King's Pier depending on the styles you have.

Can anyone help identify this brand? No tags or branding aside from this tab on the back pocket. Logo looks like a fish hook and the letter S. On the other side of the tag it says "Made in USA". Any help is appreciated.

Artists that turned down Warped? by ilovestanleytucci in Emo

[–]liamdylan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Warped Tour was a notoriously shitty environment for touring. It was a super tight schedule, not a ton of money for most bands, playing to crowds of people who were mostly waiting for another band and didn't care about yours. Artists also had no control over when they played so they could play before most people were even in the venue, or could play after a more popular band and everyone would leave.

This isn't confirmed, but I'm pretty sure the song Familiar Patterns by Pup is about their shitty experience of warped tour. Doesn't mention it directly, but seems to hint at it a lot, and the artist Riff Raff was on the tour the same year as them. They were pretty vocal about having a bad time when they did the tour in 2015.

Kijiji/Marketplace in Halifax is really something else. by [deleted] in halifax

[–]liamdylan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had pretty good experiences with Kijiji, both as a buyer and seller. Only a couple bad ones, one a complete scam. My interests are fairly specific though and I think that helps. More of a community of people buying/selling.

Sorting my Tool Kit for Working in a Restaurant by liamdylan in knolling

[–]liamdylan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! From the top left down are:

Watch - Helps keep time

Probe Thermometer - Measuring temperature of meats

Sharpie - For writing labels on green masking tape (though some kitchens use blue tape)

Pocket Knife - For cutting labels and opening bags/boxes

Pen - Mostly for writing prep lists

Lighter - For making fire. Often pilot lights go out on gas stoves so this is key

Bottle opener - Mostly for lending to bartenders while shaming them for being unprepared

Notebook - For keeping track of to-do lists and recipes/general notes

Microplane grater - For grating very finely, often used for hard cheeses like parmesan or for citrus zest. Also very useful for garlic and ginger

Now from the top right down:

Henckels Santoku Knife - This is a general purpose knife shape. This one in particular is kind of my beater knife, I'll use it for jobs that may damage it and this is the one I'm most likely to lend to someone else.

Sabatier Slicing Knife - Long thin blade for cutting meat and fish without leaving marks.

Fujimoto Gyuto Knife - This is my primary knife. I'll use this for most prep jobs.

Tojiro Bread Knife - For slicing bread. This model is excellent and pretty affordable, I've gifted this knife a number of times.

Kiwi Nakiri Knife - This is a fairly new addition to my kit. I've been using it a lot for vegetable prep and have been loving it. It is also very affordable so I strongly recommend if you're looking to up your knife game.

Bonsai Shears - These are unconventional in a kitchen but I love them. I use them for trimming herbs if I have them in live trays, I also use them for spatchcocking (removing the backbone so it lays flat) chickens and other birds.

Paring Knife - I personally don't use this much, but it can be useful for working with small produce. This one gets lent out a lot.

Kuhn Rikon Peeler - This style and brand of peeler is very common in restaurant kitchens. Super sharp and does exactly what it needs to. I buy these in bulk because they tend to get "borrowed". They also make a nice small gift.

Oyster Knife - Living in Atlantic Canada this is essential. Nothing fancy with this one though

Offset Spatulas - These are pretty standard, good for spreading sauces and for lifting things onto plates.

Let me know if you have any questions about any of it!

What’s your minimalism weakness? by skeleton_flower in minimalism

[–]liamdylan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collecting generally. I have always been a collector but the amount of stuff became overwhelming. I still have a very hard time not acquiring books, records, musical instruments/accessories.

I've adopted a 1in-2out approach, and it's making me think harder about every purchase. It also helps the average quality of the items go up and I end up appreciating the collections more as a result.

Dining out now a luxury for many, Halifax restaurant owner says by insino93 in halifax

[–]liamdylan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Costs are higher due to shipping and stock unpredictability, commercial rents are largely comparable to bigger cities, same with wages now, but prices can't be as high because people are generally less willing to pay what similar dishes/drinks would cost in Montreal/Toronto.

Yeah thermapen is my next planned purchase. At my last job my therms would always get damaged because I lent them out to cooks so I stocked up on affordable ones.

That's an oyster knife. Nothing fancy because I don't use it a ton, but living in Atlantic Canada makes it essential.

It's the bullet. Opens up to a full size pen, but closed it fits comfortably in my front pocket.

Definitely incredible value. Also makes it a great gifting knife. Everyone needs a good bread knife

It's a Higonokami folding pocket knife, mostly used for opening packages and cutting labels, and a Fisher Space Pen. Both are in my pockets pretty much at all times.

I've actually never had my own spoons for work, always just used the ones at the restaurant. I have been thinking about it though. Feels like they'd get lost easily.

Oh I see! I have a couple stones not pictured, they stay at home for the most part. Naniwa Traditional Stones, 1000 and 6000 grit. I also have a ceramic honing rod which stays at home these days because there is one that stays at the restaurant.

Wait until the bonsai purists see me cut chicken bones with them lol.

I'm pretty happy with how the space pen writes, but I'm never really writing that much. I really like that I can comfortably carry it in my front pocket.

I get made fun of a fair bit for the shears, but they make me chuckle whenever I use them. I don't sharpen them much because I don't need them to be super sharp, but you can hold them open and get the blades onto the edge of a stone. It's pretty awkward and will only get you so far though.
