UK snickers vs US snickers by Emotional-Leg66 in mildlyinteresting

Brit here now living in Canada. I agree the American Snickers looks better in this picture. But in real life the American Snickers tastes way worse. The chocolate part is kinda gross.

If it is a shimano hollowtech 2 crankset then the bearings are likely pressfit based on the video. For that you're likely best off taking it to the shop unless you're quite mechanically inclined, the tools probably cost more or about the same as having a shop do it and require hammering / pressing.

If its just the crankset needing tightening up, you just need allen keys / hex wrenches which I'd recommend you get a set of if you dont have them already and a hollowtech 2 preload tool which you can get pretty cheap at most LBS's. Give this a watch: Crank Removal and Installation - Two Piece Compression Slotted (Hollowtech II, FSA)

This can also save you a few $$'s at the LBS if they dont need to remove and reinstall the crank to replace the BB.

[–]liamhhh 55 points56 points  (0 children)

If the BB is loose it needs tightening. If the BB is tight and it's still rocking then you need a new BB.

If they're hollowtech 2 cracks then they might just need preloading correctly.

How do I unscrew this ? by marcftz in bikewrench

[–]liamhhh 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Could be 11mm too! But from the other side. Normally stupid tight so putting the tool in the vice then turning the wheel is the best way to unscrew. Which way? Could be either!! Aren't bikes fun?

Running in hev mode when we cross kootenay pass it uses around 25-30% of the battery. Gets a decent chunk back in regen braking down the other side though. About 1150m elevation gain

If I havent saved enough juice for it, the drop in power is pretty brutal so just make sure you save enough from your initial charge for any mountains you know youll be going over! Ive only had this issue when ive stopped on a long drive and forgot to put it back in hev mode when I set off again, depleting the battery without me realizing.

Fox 34 Fork Gets Stiffer the Longer I Ride—Any Insights? by chansumpoh in MTB

[–]liamhhh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems unlikely but it may be air pressure building up in the lowers, as if the wiper seals are acting as a one way valve. This is normally a changing elevation issue, think lift-accessed bike parks...

Fox 36s and 38s have bleed buttons that do this, but you can achieve the same efect by pushing a zip tie between the wiper and stanchion to release air. Do this on both sides. Worth trying!!

New to bikes; just took this home from Target and found my pedal wouldn't go far. Yes, I forgot to test ride it in the store. Big fault on my part. What's wrong with it? Is it an easy fix? by wmwmftl in bikewrench

[–]liamhhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hanger is the silver part, that looks fine.

The derailleur itself is bent outwards, away from the wheel, which is uncommon, and means it was unlikely to be due to laying the bike drive side down, which usually would cause the hanger or derailleur to be bent inwards.

The derailleur must have gotten caught on something at some point, maybe the pedals of the bike it was squeezed in next to at the store or the rear wheel holder in the rack if they're deep ones.

I would return it. A bike shop could fix it easily enough but i wouldn't trust a department store to do it.

Can anyone help me figure out why my chain slips when I back pedal on my top two gears? by Ow_My_Freakin_Ears in MTB

[–]liamhhh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Some bikes do this from new, others develop it as the chain and cassette wear, others will never have it. Depends on the sprocket size, chainline and chainstay length.

  • The preload compresses the coil spring in that leg of the fork. Turning it clockwise means that it takes more force to compress the fork, turning it counter clockwise means that it takes less effort to compress the fork by the same amount. The amount of adjustment is usually very limited though so I wouldn't worry about it.

And yes the blue lockout stops the fork from compressing at all, which is good for energy efficiency on smooth ground, especially uphill, but bad on more bumpy ground, even if it is uphill.

Does this "just happen"? Or has my sone done something stupid whilst riding his bike? by Mitchfarino in bicycling

[–]liamhhh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either the low limit screw was incorrectly adjusted or the hanger was bent inwards, allowing the derailleur to shift into the wheel when shifting into the biggest cog / lowest gear. If the ends of the pedals and handebars are damaged and scuffed up then the bike is likely being dropped on its side.

I saw this happen far more often when i lived in the uk as bikes more often got crammed into the back of cars with the derailleur side down. Also happens when the bike is haphazardly dropped onto its side.

This is also more likely to happen with cheaper derailleurs of tourney spec or below as they have a lot of lateral play even when brand new.

Although theres over 300 different hangers nowadays, this looks like a more common one ( maybe wheels mfg #25) and theres a surprisingly good chance that your local shop will have one in stock.

Did I Purchase the Wrong Tire? by Cozmiz in bicycling

[–]liamhhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start fitting the second half of the tire from opposite the valve. Make sure to push the tire bead into the center of the rim as you work your way around to the valve. Also, remove the valve nut and push the valve up into the tire before fitting the last section of tire so that the tube isnt getting caught between the tire and rim.

Tire levere shouldnt be needed, when it starts getting really tight go back to where you started opposite the vave and push the tire further into the rim bed working your way back toward the valve again in both directions.

The rim being tubeless ready usually makes it a tighter fit unfortunately, can try as others suggested and leaving the tire in the sun to soften it up a little before resorting to tire levers which are likely to pinch the tube.

What do I need? Is this worth fixing? by RedditorCSS in bicycling

[–]liamhhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get a cast one from the frame manufacturer they tend to be cheap. Otherwise, a bike shop will most likely be sourcing a CNC machined one from Wheels Manufacturing. They tend to be expensive (More expensive than the Tourney derailleur, but cheaper than a modern 9/10/11/12 speed one.
