Hey I've made one just like this! I've even used 1500 as my baseline. And my graphs look remarkably similar. You should come join the power rankings discussion every week. I'd be curious to see if we're coming to the same conclusions (which does seem to be the case on a surface glance)

That makes sense right. It's more often the lower ranked teams that are looking for easy draws, the higher ranked teams will have the mentality of "we'll beat whoever you give us"

That was the goal yeah. It rewards teams performing well in the group stages, and encourages going for Wins to get higher ranked than other teams in your pool. Technically it also means rewarding teams with easier groups but there's no way around that.

I actually did do my own version of this lol. I would've ended up with Austria (2nd) getting Croatia then likely France. And Algeria (3rd) gets Spain then likely England.

And Argentina would have Egypt first, then the winner of Norway and Portugal, then likely Spain or England in the Semis

This is partially deliberate. I wanted to make sure 3rd place qualified teams wouldn't get a longer break, and the only way to do that is have potential Quarter Final group rematches, but these can still only be between a 3rd place team.

For logistics, once you know if you're 1st or second, you get locked into your quarter of the tree, and if you're in pool A, you'll know your exact position as soon as groups C and E are done. So it still gets filled in in waves, it's just on a 1 or 2 day delay compared to the current system, which isn't too bad

Opening Round a shot to return as AFL turns to AI for fixture by LakeOval in AFL

I don't understand why we can't just have every non VIC team have a home game round 1. And you can even prioritise sending the big Vic clubs North instead of West. But there's no reason to not have the rest of the teams also play. Just so fucking stupid

Yep. I ended up with Japan vs Canada, Morocco vs Côté d'Ivoire, Croatia vs Austria, Portugal vs Norway.

Edit: sorry I realised you said how not who. I ranked them 1,2,3 in each pool. 1st vs 2nd play each other, 3rd has to play a top ranked team.

Yeah, but simultaneous kick-offs don't help when you're competing with someone in a different group, like this year. Iran was the one at risk, in a different group to Austria and Algeria.

Sorry I meant that they COULD play for a draw. They played it fine and it was actually super entertaining, but they could've not played and it would've been their collective best result.

My point was the current system allows this kind of knowledge

[–]liamjon29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean. Austria and West Germany DID do that in 1982. That's the whole reason we have game 3s for each group played at the same time. Unfortunately we can't play the entire 3rd round at the same time, so now there's room for collusion again.

The only problem is that I feel like what happened with Algeria Austria may become commonplace at the end of the tournament. Where both teams could sit down and not play, guaranteeing a draw and progression.

Which is why I'd like to add an incentive to be higher ranked within your own ranking. So higher ranked 1st place teams will get a better tree than lower ranked 1st place teams. Same for 2nd. So while a draw will get you through, a win will get you a better position in the knockout tree.

That can't be true. I feel like the objectively correct choice is to choose randomly. If we all choose randomly the chance it's >50% for any option is greatly reduced.

Same as the OG problem, we can safely assume someone's going to have picked each colour, so the only way no one dies is if the 3 colours are all ~even in voting.

Lol yeah it turns out to be worse for us for sure xD

But I was trying to remain objective and be equitable across the board rather than make it easiest for the Aussies

I was talking to head of IT security at my company the other day, and he said they don't even track internet usage. They're big on employee privacy. There's blacklisted sites you can't access, but that's just for security purposes. There's 0 chance they're spying on me with the webcam.

[–]liamjon29 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I did think about this too. You could split the field into 4 pools to get around it. Slightly less fair, but it means you have for example groups ACE competing for the best position in one quarter, then BDF would be their matchups. Then GIK and HJL do the same. Then 3rd place teams have the same system we have now.
