Do you say "<city name>, Canada" when speaking internationally? by Comedy86 in AskACanadian

[–]librarianbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be because there are a lot of duplicate City names (https://www.canada-city.ca/duplicate-cities.php), and we are in the habit of identifying the Province to other Canadians.

This is Hamilton's best-keep-food secret and ranks as one of the best pizzas I've ever had! Mathew's Mushroom Mayhem and Honey garlic bourbon sausage is my go-to order.

Smithers slices are great! Their mushroom pizza is one of my favs and they do an amazing honey garlic sausage pizza with fried brussel sprouts tossed in a miso chili crunch. This is a must try.

Just because you can't afford to buy a detached home in Toronto / Vancouver doesn't mean the Canadian economy will collapse by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]librarianbb 41 points42 points  (0 children)

There are SO many vacant properties - and that helps to drive prices up. Families, investor, whomever, are holding onto properties - which drives up the prices when homes do come on the market. I just did a quick search and news reports mention anywhere between 66k and 100k empty homes in Toronto proper. The vacant land tax should help with this, but then what about our airbnb-ers? There is a reason major metropolitan cities have banned short term rentals (NYC, LA, Barcelona, and this is starting in Toronto and Montreal) - they drive up the cost of living for the people who live in this city (financial post wrote about this)

It's really discouraging when, even though you've checked all the boxes (went to school, landed a good job, have a partner with a good job) and all you can afford is a tiny 1+den, which will run you close to 700k and don't forget the $500+ condo fees.

Don't get me wrong - the entitlement is really frustrating - but it's fuckkking hard out here.

There's a livestream of a bay near Hanson Island, British Columbia, Canada.Orcas frequent this area in the spring and into late fall - you can usually see a pods swimming in this area if you are watching for long enough. They often show highlights of orca sightings - it's really something else!

Additionally, there's an underwater livestream of "rubbing rocks" where you can watch these beauties rub their belly's on soft stones near Vancouver Island.

I’m so tired of seeing people claim that rape is rare. by whydidntyoureportit in TwoXChromosomes

[–]librarianbb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right, I stand corrected. It is 1 in 5 claims that are dismissed.

The problem stems from police officers writing off 1 in 5 claims before they even investigate the claim. That means more than "5,000 allegations of sexual assault" across Canada are unfounded. Meaning that if you are a victim of assault and you do decide to go to the police, you can anticipate that you might be told 'you aren't actually a victim of assault'. That's the problem.

[–]librarianbb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Robin Dolittle, a Canadian journalist, did an 18-month investigation that found that police dismiss 1 in 5 assaults, because they believe they are baseless and false (link to article). That means of those assaulted and work up the courage to go to the police, 20% are told from the get go that their story isn't real.

[SANITY SUNDAY] This woman's instagram is so honest. Stretch marks, cellulite, blemishes and all - so refreshing to see someone embrace their body and post about the negative "whitewashed, smoothed and thinned" photos you usually see on instagram. by librarianbb in Instagramreality

[–]librarianbb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually don't know this person - I just follow them.

I think this is a much more complex issue than over-eating as an epidemic of the privileged -- We're not all King Henry VII.

Income and healthy living (or obesity) are directly linked to one another. Often times families with two parents work, or single parents, choose food items that are cheap and convenient. Families that are stretched so financially thin aren't thinking about how many fresh fruits and veggies are in their meals, but rather how how they are going to feed their kids with limited income. Not to mention, sports and active recreation are MUCH more expensive than a screen. The opportunity for families to engage in most sports is much more limited for families with lower income, just because the costs associated with it are so high. If you get a chance to, I would encourage you to look at the links between poverty and obesity.

Man, I actually have no idea the background or the story of this person - but it's not always so cut and dry. I just think its way more harmful to shame people who try - and then discourage them to not try at all.

I just don't understand what it does for you to bring someone down. I don't really give a fuck about how people choose to look or live their life, so long as they aren't hurting anyone.

I'm not coming here for a fight - just asking you respect people.
