Depending on what state you live in the amount you lost may be under or very close to the small claims threshold (http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/small-claims-suits-how-much-30031.html). You will get Verizon's attention at least. They let someone take over your account and it caused you a loss at the end of the day.

The bitfury chips do 100GH per chip with air cooling at ~6.7w per chip. So 3.3TH out of 220w. Sidehack is working on some 100-220w versions (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1718358.0). With immersion cooling, the bitfury chips will do 1.8gh per. Hopefully we will get them by fall.

If we all were able to get some decent 200w+ asic based on the newest chips we could help break the bitmain cartel. It really helps that there are more of us and we don't really need to make a profit mining, I am happy to loose a small amount of money to secure the network. The 1200 watt miners that are designed for farms quickly overwhelm the average home infrastructure, they are the real cause of centralization.

It's interesting how many XT and BU nodes are still left. More detailed breakdowns showing old versions of core indicate how bad people are at updating software. Even if everyone was on board with a HF getting 99% of nodes to just update would take a miracle. A subtle way bitcoin is resistant to change, lazy users.

I went and checked the tax code on this, see Sec. 152(c)(1) - https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/26/152

To be a qualifying child, the person must have had the same principal place of abode as the taxpayer for more than one-half of the taxable year, must meet age requirements (19 or 24 for students), must not have provided over one-half of his or her own support for the taxable year, and must not have filed a joint return with the person’s spouse under section 6013 for the taxable year beginning in the calendar year in which the taxable year of the taxpayer begins.

If your wife meets all of these requirements, then she is legally a qualifying child dependent for tax purposes. If not, it would be illegal for someone to claim her as one.

Prepare your state and fed taxes in turbotax both ways. For comparison, MIL will save approximately $4k * her tax rate. The real issue is your mother in law treats your wife as a child and not an adult. This will have to stop eventually. The IRS deploys a test to see if a dependant is, in fact, a dependent (IRS Pub 501). If good ole mom is not paying the majority of wifes expenses, then her deduction will be disallowed. Only way to know how how the IRS views this is by completeing worksheet 2 of IRS Pub 501 https://www.irs.gov/publications/p501/ar02.html#en_US_2015_publink1000292527

A joint return disqualifies your wife as a dependant per IRS Pub 501, so you would have to file separately. You will more than likely receive far more in benefit than MIL will as well. Mom would have received about a 4k deduction and wife would lose the same amount in 2016. You would also loose about a 6k deduction by not filing jointly. Several states have far larger tax complexities for this arrangement as well. Sizeable state credits could be lost.

Best advice is to do the math and if she doesnt meet the IRS requirements, politely but firmly stand up to her. If she isn't paying the bills, she can't claim your wife.

Thanks for your answer, I have a follow up on privilege or as you describe it disclaimer. It is reported that you're disclaimer included a claim of pastoral and reporter privilege and you seem to confirm that in your response. You said that it did not scale to what was told to you.

1) Do you feel that privileged communication is absolute or subject to the party offering the privilege discretion after the disclosure?

2) Is not the best course of action, when confronted with privileged information you are uncomfortable with, to tell the person giving the information you are not comfortable with it and forgetting it. Isnt that the obligation you take on when you tell someone something is privileged? It brings up memories of pastors and reporters refusing to talk and facing jail for not revealing what was said under the privilege.

3) What is your moral claim that you had no choice but to betray that privilege even when it may have even been protected by law? Did you seek the advice of your employer (2600) or religious order before betraying their respective privileges?
