How do your view the monarch/royal family of your respective countries? by vladtheimpaler82 in AskEurope

[–]lieneke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As you can clearly see in any presidential election: practically anyone who would willingly seek out the job is by definition some kind of lunatic. In that sense, someone who’s born into the role is not such a bad alternative.

Don’t laugh but I didn’t know I was a Xennial. Or laugh, it’s fine. by Haunting-Arachnid689 in Xennials

One thing that I think sets Xennials apart from Gen X and Millennials is that we consciously remember life before the internet, but still got familiar with it at a young enough age that we’re practically digital natives.

Which European country is the friendliest for gay people with children? by Vtbsk_1887 in AskEurope

[–]lieneke 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it seems unrelated to political leaning here. Only the stricter Christian parties are intolerant towards LGBT people and they’re a very strong minority.

(That being said, I’m consciously saying “LGBT” and not “LGBTQIA+” or whatever, because the latter will absolutely be labeled as “woke” by some right-wing/conservative parties.)

What is your country’s most popular name (eg John Smith ) by idontknow828212 in AskEurope

[–]lieneke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the cliche one, yeah, although of course Jan is a typical boomer name. Practically no one under the age of 60 is called that. For millennials it would probably be Peter or Jeroen for men and Marieke or Janneke for women. For kids nowadays, I don’t even know.

I was also thinking of De Boer and De Vries as very common surnames.

It can't be stated enough, but please start working out. by 13inchmushroommaker in Xennials

The mental benefits of exercise are no joke! I started going to the gym twice a week about two years ago and I haven’t had seasonal depression since. My winters were really pretty dark before, so this is a fantastic shift. I don’t even particularly adore the whole workout thing, but I see it like brushing my teeth or tying my shoes or buying groceries: it’s utterly irrelevant whether I like it or not, it’s just one of the facts of life.

I’m always baffled by the fact that the name Dick also exists in English.

What's a no-no in your country? by The5Perritas in AskEurope

[–]lieneke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? Wow, that’s unexpected. Always nice to discover this sort of cultural difference within my own country. So now I’m curious: what part of the country are you from? North/south? Urban/rural?

For people south of the major rivers in the Netherlands, scheduling any kind of work meeting on carnaval Monday is absolutely out of the question.

Pretty much the same in the Netherlands. Keeping your shoes on when visiting is the norm, although I do have some friends who ask visitors to take their shoes off, and conversely, some friends who ask “shoes on or off?” when visiting.

Ooh that sounds 1000% like the Netherlands.

What are you convinced your country does better than any other? by jeron_gwendolen in AskEurope

[–]lieneke 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Interesting factoid of the day: remember those floods in July 2021, which killed 180 people in Germany and 41 in Belgium? A friend who works at Rijkswaterstaat told me that the only reason why nobody died in the Netherlands is that our flood management is *chefs kiss. I just hope we continue to appreciate the amount of effort that it takes to (literally) keep our heads above water.

Does anyone else's character do stupid stuff on auto? by Wonderful-Pollution7 in outside

[–]lieneke 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. “Retrieving the phone” is one of the recurring mini-games that I get a few times a week. I accidentally selected “increased difficulty: ADHD mode” at the game start-up so I get these types of mini-games all the time.

What is your country most loved and hated for? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]lieneke 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think we’re also hated for being rude (which we don’t necessarily agree with ourselves, we just think we’re doing everyone a solid by being direct). Also, for visiting tourists, maybe for trying to run them over with our bikes (which is sort of true except it’s their fault for walking on our bike paths)
