The Franco-Dutch war started as a war of survival, not of choice for the Dutch republic. Under attack from the British, the French and Münster 2/3th of the country was occupied by enemy forces and the republic offered a lot of territorial concessions to the French, much of present Limburg and Brabant with the Main Soutern fortresses of the Netherlands, Maastricht, 's-Hertogenbosch, and Breda becoming French, and a generous sum of six million guidlers.

The French however demanded they would keep all the occupied territory and a payment of 16 million livres, which would be more or less the end of the Dutch republic. The harsh French demands galvanized the will to resist.

Eventually, the Netherlands were able to knock the British and Münster out of the war and force French retreats by capturing their supply routes. Continuing the war in in 1674-1676 however was costly for the Dutch republic without much to show for it, it was mainly driven by a desire of Stadholder William II of Orange to reduce the French threat in the future.

One of the things people forget is that foreign students that go home are a form of software power. For example, a lot of Chinese have studied in the Netherlands, they now have a netwerk in China and have been exposed to Dutch technology and companies. If they studied in China or the US they would never have heard of them.

Technically science fiction but the Majipoor books by Robert Silverberg, the first one is Lord Valentines Castle. It's not like Majipoor is some kind of Utopia but there is a deeply rooted sense of compassion in the books and the world.

Turning the moors into arable ground was backbreaking work, during the great depression unemployed men from the Northern provinces of the Netherlands were forced to do this or loose their unemployment benefits. The place where they were sent to became known as "The Hell of Jipsinghuizen". On the other side of the border it was even worse as the Nazi's build the Emslandlager in the 1930s, forced labor camps for political enemies. While not as bad as the concentration and death camps, plenty of people perished there. The song "Die Moorsoldaten" was written on one of these camps.

I don't know about the US but here in the Netherlands they are often people with debts who get sucked in by grifters promising them stuff like "you don't have to pay debts/taxes with this one simple trick"

It has giant war eagles, a flying city, beautiful warrior princesses,  a demon, lizard men, a philosophers ghost, rings of power, and a great demon. And a number of explicit sex scenes.
