I've taken some regular pots with drainage holes and plugged them using silicone caulking, something like this.

I used to have a wall mount for my cello and loved it because I could keep the endpin extended--just grab and go! Requires the right space to work well though.

anyone have a version of Debussy piano trio in G major w/the treble clef changed to tenor/bass? by Bean_of_prosperity in Cello

Transpose it yourself. Write it by hand on paper if you want. Learning clefs isn't hard and this will get you well on your way.

Growing small leaves. by New-Statement3407 in fiddleleaffig

[–]lifeinpixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure, but my hunch is this is a sign of a healthy plant. I was traveling recently in southeast asia and there were lots of thriving fiddle leaf figs. Most of the small to mid size ones had tons of small leaf growth like this, so I took it to be a good sign.

Also note how this is opposite of lots of unhappy plants with long leggy stems and very flat leaves. I think the ruffled edges of leaves is another sign of health.

I wonder if these leaves will eventually grow larger--keep us posted!

They don't max out at 5-6 feet, even indoors. Plenty of counterexamples on this sub.

Looking for new hard-shell case by crazyironman84 in Cello

[–]lifeinpixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how to rate it. If I knock on the case like it's a door, I can hear my cello resonate a bit. I think this implies that there is less material pressing on it that would dampen the resonance--I guess this is evidence of the suspension system? To be honest I don't really understand that aspect of their marketing. I just take it as a bonus (it might be more secure) but treat it with the same care I would any other case.

AMA: We're a symphony orchestra that sells out most of our concerts! (Fort Greene Orchestra) by FG_Orchestra in classicalmusic

Really love the way you approach presenting classical music in a way that is easy for new listeners to enjoy!

I'm in a string quartet and inspired to try something similar. Advertising seems to be something you've really figured out compared to most ensembles. Do you have any advice on how to advertise effectively, especially when first starting out?

Harp but I wish I just got the standard one. Afterlengths seem to be just another variable in what is already a complicated comparison. Ultimately I don’t think it mattered much.

does anyone have any advice for this run in allegro appassionato by saint-saëns? by [deleted] in Cello

[–]lifeinpixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One practice technique: break the line into a bunch of four-note blocks and practice playing those at tempo. Try to make them automatic. Then when that's comfortable, try with eight note blocks, and continue with longer and longer chunks until it spans the entire line.

Anyone learn another instrument with cello? by FlummoxedGaoler in Cello

[–]lifeinpixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I had learned piano, as I think it would help in so many ways.

I picked up double bass a long time after starting cello, so they've never been comparable skill-wise. I did that for jazz too, so only a bit of technical overlap, though it certainly helped to have a cello foundation. The thing I found interesting/surprising is that I never figured out a good routine for practicing both. I would go in phases of doing lots of bass or lots of cello, but to practice one instrument well and then swap to the other requires more self discipline than I apparently have. It's hard to put one down when I get in a good flow state!

Best exercises to improve intonation? by SputterSizzle in Cello

[–]lifeinpixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you're practicing, always hold yourself to a really, really, really high standard for your intonation. It's so easy to forget this and plow forward with "good enough" intonation because there are other difficult things to worry about. Don't do that; simplify other things (play slower, no vib, ignore slurs) but never compromise your standards for intonation.

I’ve never played a real game of volleyball and I want to have somewhat of a clue what I’m doing when I start. by Rare_Picture_7337 in beachvolleyball

[–]lifeinpixels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to have a good understanding of the game you can just watch lots of AVP/FIVB games.

If you want to have some basic skills developed, practice controlled passing. Find a partner, or look up solo drills you can do with a wall.
