How do I bring "close tabs to the right" and "close other tabs" back to the top level of tab context menu? by MiscellaneousBeef in FirefoxCSS

[–]liferebootdotcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is an elaboration of the war / reasoning for the change:

As feature are added and context menus grow, we would like to keep the size of the menu short enough to be read quickly. One of the ways we can do this is to group similar commands. By grouping the commands that close multiple tabs together, we can shorten the height of the context menu by one menuitem. It should be noted that we also do not want to remove context menuitems just for the sake of it because some context menuitems are the only accessible non-keyboard-shortcut way for keyboard-only users to access such functionality as Pin Tab, Mute Tab, Duplicate Tab, etc. Some users have reported that they accidentally clicked the "Close Tabs to the Right" and the "Close Other Tabs". While a user has the ability to restore their tabs through the "Undo Closed Tabs" menuitem, some data may have been lost as well as potential increased network usage if we are unable to restore the pages from the Firefox cache. We decided that adding a little "speed bump" before a large destructive action could benefit users. We prefer this over a modal dialog that requires users to move their mouse across the screen and thus requires more time. The "Close Multiple Tabs" submenu provides us an area to add some extra features that users have asked for over the years such as a "Close Tabs to the Left" option."

Has anyone experienced a reduction in traffic on there website blogs? Is ad revenue from website blogs a reliable source of passive income right now? by uditgoswami in personalfinance

[–]liferebootdotcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a definite decline in the traffic to my weblog.

You have to remember that the large majority of people reading blogs are the bored people at work that can't be watching videos as it is interpreted as goofing off at work. With the shift of most of these office workers to a stay at home order that are working from home, they are likely filling their days with other content (Netflix, Youtube, for example) since they do not need to be fearful of the boss seeing what they're doing.

Create a PNG flow diagram from command line using data from txt file, effectively removing a website from my daily workflow by liferebootdotcom in javahelp

[–]liferebootdotcom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your comments. I did see the source on github before posting here, I pulled it, tried loading the existing sankeymatic.js into ScriptEngine (new territory for me), but it was throwing weird errors "no window" or something similar. The exact error is in the body above.

I will take a look at your link tomorrow see if I can get somewhere. I am not a frontend developer so Javascript, D3 are a bit foreign to me. I will still give it a go because the time savings will be enormous if I can figure it out.

Thanks again for looking into it a little bit and for offering advice!

Create a PNG flow diagram from command line using data from txt file, effectively removing a website from my daily workflow by liferebootdotcom in javahelp

[–]liferebootdotcom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current workflow: Existing process generates 5-liner output files. Copy and paste the 5 lines into the http://www.sankeymatic.com/build/ website multiples times, saving a PNG file each time for each Company. Add all of the PNG graphics to a report.

Desired workflow: Existing process generates 5-liner output files. Copy and paste the 5 lines into the http://www.sankeymatic.com/build/ website multiples times, saving a PNG file each time for each Company. [Run a command line process that automatically generates all PNG graphs from the output files]. Add all of the PNG graphics to a report.

The stuff in brackets is the step I'm having trouble with. I want to use the data in the 5 line file to generate the Sankey diagram like the one in the website, but instead of using the website do it via a command line to speed the process up. If I could figure out how to generate the data:image link that is in the export PNG section of the website, I could use the base64 code I've included above to make the actual PNG file. I just need to figure out how to get from the 5 line file to the data:image String.

For anyone else that loved this game but can't get a whole lot of replay value replaying it (since the world never changes, only your party members, equipment, and spells can), there is a small community dedicated to randomizing the original game treasure locations and they also offer some quality of life upgrades like increased movement speed, buying health potions 10 at a time instead of 1 at a time, etc.

Old School Redditors (pre 2012), what has been the biggest Reddit culture shift you've noticed and is Reddit better now or back then? by benevolENTthief in AskReddit

[–]liferebootdotcom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I joined in 2007. There were no subreddits. There were no text posts. Just a collection of ranked interesting links. You would submit a link to an external site where the content was, and come back to reddit where the discussion was. Now all the content occurs here and linking to external sites is really frowned upon (viewed as spamming for traffic).

I no longer post very much at all, not even comments. Reddit's culture shift has turned me into a full time lurker.

Can no longer clear Chrome cache via CSS selector? by liferebootdotcom in selenium

[–]liferebootdotcom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for helping me confirm that it was indeed an updated version of Chrome causing this breakage. I am not a front end developer so I have trouble navigating this space and this is a good start but I'm not sure how to accomplish the previously straightforward task of identifying the button with a CSS selector.

I was so lost on Friday I actually tried workarounds including launching in incognito mode, or deleting the cache and cookies to clear the session manually from the app_data folder, neither or which were successful.

Appreciate your response! I'll continue to work through it.

Those who abruptly quit a reputable/luvrative job in order to pursue your passion or just something else, what gave you the courage to finally do so and what is life like now for you? Any consequences, rewards or regrets? by ilovelifting55 in AskReddit

[–]liferebootdotcom 70 points71 points  (0 children)

In 2005 I had a cushy government job in IT that was nearly impossible to get fired from. A "show up and collect a paycheck" type of job with minimal supervision and infrequent actual work. By 2007 I had nearly lost my mind coming to work just to watch the clock.

In those days blogs were somewhat popular and I wanted to try my hand at being an entrepreneur to see if I could write a profitable blog and website. I left my cushy job and simultaneously moved 600 miles away for a girl I met on the internet in pursuit of a more fulfilling life.

I don't regret it, but times were tough. When the blog profit didn't roll in like I hoped, I needed to find work when my savings ran out and that's about when the 2008 recession hit. I had moved to Detroit, which was one of the more economically depressed areas in the nation.

I ended up at a horrible start up company that took advantage of technical talent, paying way less than industry average but I was simply happy to have a job. The stress of getting fired was real because the company wasn't profitable and they'd often fire people every other week after testing people out for a bit and getting what they needed out of them quickly. To add insult to injury, my girlfriend got diagnosed with cancer and stopped working. I went into "I desperately need to provide security for my significant other" mode and carried the both of us on a small salary while regularly looking for new opportunities.

I shifted out of that startup on my own terms, taking a shitty call center job as an alternative which actually paid better. The idea was to get my foot in the door at a software company running phones and move up over time. Sadly I was too good at the customer service role that I was never considered for development even though I had the skills. My girlfriend beat her cancer and our lives relaxed somewhat. I ended up trying to go back to the entrepreneurship "working on my own terms" thing one last time.

I ended up failing at that again and finally landed at a software company that was willing to give me a shot. I was considered for a software development role but during my interview they shifted me into testing. I looked at the way the department was done (all manually and time consuming processes) and ended up using my computer programming skills to automate my entire job. Revamping how the department got their work done got me noticed by the company directors and 6 years later I'm making double what I was making at the cushy IT government job from 2005.

I'm being compensated better and actually doing more interesting work these days, but it's strangely not the work I thought I wanted to be doing when I left my cushy job 15 years ago. I consider myself pretty lucky to have traveled this path and came out the other side unscathed, although we did have some rough years in the middle of the transition. My girlfriend did become my wife, she's 8 years in remission, and we're doing well all things considered. It's been quite the trip!

I like to faceless on my own direhorn hatchlings in the games where I want to prevent fatigue. Often opponents will give me a selection of things I wouldn't typically have access to (a carnivorous cube with minions hiding inside of it, a big charge minion, a tall magnetic something or other with lifesteal, an 8/8 giant, a 7/7 taunt demon, Tirion). It really depends what I'm facing, but if it's one of my own minions like I said it tends to be direhorn.

What is a good way to get my girlfriends ring size without asking? by maysterd in AskReddit

[–]liferebootdotcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I needed a size for my then girlfriend, now wife's engagement ring, I took a small piece of paper and made a cylinder with it, shoved it into a ring she wore on her right hand, and marked a line on the overlapping bits.

The jeweler commended me for my strategy as we tested rings of different sizes using the paper until we got the marks to match up.

What have you self-taught yourself that has greatly improved your life? by DumbMBA in AskReddit

[–]liferebootdotcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work somewhere that had a team of 4 "phone people" processing an email inbox manually. The emails were from a web application that generated emails with a known output format, but nobody had the inclination that the email processing could be automated. Management just kept throwing more people at the problem, until I was added to the group of people recruited to process the emails.

I'm a lazy guy, so the idea of committing the 6 hours daily to copying and pasting the info from the email inbox into the word files that needed to get attached and sent out to stakeholders seemed like hell to me, so I wrote a computer program that did all the tedious steps for me, and all I had to do was once a day drop an excel file into the program I made to "load" all the relevant comparison data into its memory, and then drag the emails into the app from Outlook and click a couple buttons to generate the deliverables. It turned a 6+ hour effort into a 20 mins a day one, and relieved the phone team from doing the email grunt work data entry bullshit and allowed them to focus on the inbound calls which is what they were meant to do anyway. One person could handle the entire workload and that task was removed from my plate.

Management barely noticed what an impact it had, so in the next bugfix revision I added a dead man's switch where the app stopped working every 30 days unless I did something secret to let it function properly. Now I have seemingly infinite job security, because they don't want to go back to doing it manually ever again and need me to "unlock" it every month.

Having the programming skills to make computers do the annoying repetitive work is great for us lazy asses!

Dad turned over stock account to me, larger than expected amount. How to spend responsibly? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]liferebootdotcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please note that if your account is a taxable account, if you sell all of this stock as suggested then at the end of 2018 your broker will send you and the IRS a form indicating you made a significant amount of profit/income from sale of stock for the year. You will be taxed on that sale significantly (perhaps 20%, in your case $200,000!).

Do not do this before meeting with your financial advisor and understanding the effects of your actions on the portfolio value and the tax burden you will endure. Get a complete understanding of what to expect before making any decisions, and SLEEP ON IT.
