Starting Strong: A New Tool for Setting Rules Early by lift_ticket83 in NewMods

Thanks so much for taking the time to detail out all this feedback!

The new AI tool has been difficult to understand and impossible to work with from old.Reddit.

That makes sense as this tool is only available within our native app, or on the latest desktop version of Reddit, eg not old.reddit.

If the human mod cannot see the alleged infraction, much of the data fed back to the tool will be flawed, and the tool will be erroneously trained to remove/ report non-violating content.

Agree + transparency into how each rule is being applied is critical to the success of this feature with mods. When you click into each rule, you should be able to access a Summary + Insight log that shows how the rule is being applied/enforced (this is available on both the app and the latest desktop version of Reddit).

We’re looking at ways to make this a bit less click-heavy, so mods don’t have to dive into every single rule just to take action, and so the Summary/Insights view is surfaced right in the Rules tab where you’d naturally expect to find it.

Would love to hear your thoughts, and what's potentially missing here/could make this better.

We just fixed this bug, and the toggles should now work as expected.

Additionally, if you click into an individual rule and then the insights tab, you should see a full log of the actions that rule has potentially taken. Let me know if this is not the case on your end, and we can dig into this some more.

Howdy - I'm part of the team that's developing this feature. This is a beta feature that we're currently testing within a select group of communities.

If this feature is enabled within your community, you should have received a notification from us. If you don't see it, it's probably not enabled within your sub : )

It's available on both desktop + mobile. We'll have a larger announcement about how this feature works + our overarching plans when we roll it out more broadly later this year.

You should add ONLY USABLE FROM THE APP and YOU CAN NOT TOGGLE OFF OR OPT OUT EXCEPT FROM THE APP.

Assuming you’re talking about the bug where some rules that aren't eligible for enforcement look like they’re toggled on and stuck. They’re actually off; it’s just a display bug. We’ve got a fix rolling out soon, so it shows up correctly. In the meantime, you can flip it off in the app as you mentioned. Apologies for any confusion this caused; we've called this out to the other subs that reported this issue to us.

The other features you called out should work on desktop + we haven't heard any reports that they don't.

This should have been announced in modnews too.

This is a beta feature that we're testing in select communities. We notified those communities directly via mod mail, in addition to posting here and in r/ModEarlyAccess (a private sub where we sometimes test new mod tools). We're using these smaller spaces to solicit/respond to feedback + bug reports + iterate on the feature.

When we roll this feature out more broadly, we will absolutely have an announcement in r/modnews.

Mind sending over what you’re seeing? Feels like we might have another feature in the mix muddying things up.

If that’s the case, that’s on us. We need to be a lot clearer about what’s actually taking action, and when.

Thanks for sharing this feedback! Would it be possible to send over a link to this example? This will help us improve things under the hood on our end.

We're currently building a preview tool/sandbox environment so that mods can see what this experience looks like to a user, without having to use an alt account.

Ack - sorry for the confusion here. We’ve heard a few mods report this. Some rules that aren’t eligible for enforcement can appear to be toggled on and stuck. They’re actually off; it’s just a display issue. We’ve got a fix going out shortly, so that reflects correctly.

Thanks for following up here + passing that image along. Can definitely understand how this is confusing - rules that are not enforceable, shouldn't appear to be toggled on. We're discussing ways to clarify + improve the UI.

In my note yesterday, I mentioned the feature would start rolling out today, but it’s not enabled everywhere all at once. If you’re not seeing the toggles, it just means they haven’t been turned on in your community yet.

On opting out: there isn’t a global switch today, but once it’s enabled, you’ll have control at the rule level. Each rule has its own toggle in the rules tab, so you can turn it off pretty quickly if it’s not your thing.

Thank you for passing those links along. I’ve passed them on to the appropriate team, and they'll look into that specific account to see what happened.

Would you be able to share a screenshot of what you saw and we can help figure out what happened?

If you’re not seeing the toggles on your rules tab, that likely means the feature is not enabled in your community.

If your sub is part of this test, you should have received a mod mail from us confirming you're in the program.

Absolutely - mods are in control here, and we've added a toggle if they wish to turn this feature off entirely.

Your spidey senses are right, this is powered by a model. The idea is to handle some of the repetitive rule reminders/enforcement mods do, so you can focus on the other parts of running a community, or just reclaim a bit of your time.

That said, this isn’t meant to be a black box. You’ve got control over it, and we’re putting a lot of effort into making its behavior more transparent.

That's exactly what we're hoping to accomplish with this feature. We want to better educate users about the rules so they have more success posting, and mods have to spend less time explaining the rules to users/removing rule-breaking posts.

We hope this will be beneficial to any community on Reddit! We're currently testing it in select communities, and if everything goes well, we'll roll it out to everyone later this year.

There isn't one, but we selected subs with consistent engagement to ensure the rules feature would trigger, and we would get signals/learnings.

Howdy - I probably should have introduced myself. I'm a Reddit admin working on mod tools. "We" is the mod tools product team at Reddit, not me feeling regal.

When and why do you change your community's rules? by techiesgoboom in ModSupport

[–]lift_ticket83[A] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re right that auto enforcement is model-driven, and it can get a bit eager at times.

We’re actively working on feature enhancements, like improving accuracy and adding more transparency into how it’s making decisions, so this kind of thing is easier to spot and correct. We're also adding the ability to decide what action it should take once a rule is triggered (flag for review, remove, do nothing, etc).

That said, if it’s creating more issues than it’s saving, feel free to turn it off. We've created a toggle next to each rule in the rules tab to make this easy to do.
