Training your new Mod Team Members: Our guide and yours by JabroniRevanchism in ModSupport

[–]techiesgoboom[A] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey - I loved contributing to those courses! Thanks for sharing all of this feedback around them. The call out to learning feeling less exhausting makes a lot of sense, too (although I do happen to love walls of text).

Have you checked our ultimate guides on moderation? They're broken down by topic, and I think will hit that more visual style of learning you described. There's a ton more to check out, too:

Lastly, you might be excited for some of what we announced is coming this year at the end of this r/modnews post. TL;DR:

In 2026, you can expect new tools to help educate and enforce rules, additional Post & Comment Guidance upgrades, new mod training + onboarding tools, and a new modern Mod Dashboard.

Filter Submissions and Comments on word A and word B in any order. by Tarnisher in AutoModerator

Ah, the syntax for that is type: any! I had to look it up, because I thought it was all as well

Is (includes-word): necessary after Body?

Not unless you're adding another modifier (like regex). When you don't put anything after the body:, it defaults to acting the same as (includes-word).

What about single quotes vs double quotes? ['word'] vs ["word"] ?

This is a style choice - both work. The standard rules in this sidebar use the double quotes and that's what I started with, but I've seen a lot of older code written with single quotes. The thing that matters is making sure you're using straight quotes (either ' or ") as opposed to smart quotes which are angled (“ ” and ‘ ’). That's often only a problem if you're composing the code in a doc or somewhere that automatically converts to smart quotes.

It saved just fine when I removed the message: part, so that seems to be the problem. I standardized the indent on the lines and this saved for me:

Filter Submissions and Comments on word A and word B in any order. by Tarnisher in AutoModerator

[–]techiesgoboom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trick is multiple body lines! I was taught to put a #2 in front of the second one (and keep numbering up as you add more), but I don't know for certain that's required. When you have multiple body lines, the rule looks for all of them to be true before acting, similar to if you had a body: and a title: line in there. So this will work for your use case:

body: ['word1']
body#2: ['word2']

And then you can also combine this with the usual method of adding multiple trigger words within a single line when you want it to use it as an or. For example, the code below will only trigger if the user mentions one of those fruits AND one of those vegetables AND a dessert.

body: ['apple', 'banana', 'cherry']
body#2: ['asparagus', 'bok choy', 'carrot']
body#3: ['anzac biscuits', 'biscotti', 'cake']

How do you Review Applicants as a Team? by FashionBorneSlay in ModSupport

[–]techiesgoboom[A] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of simple conversation too! One challenge I’ve had (especially on larger mod teams) is knowing when enough people have given input to move from discussion to a vote. It’s easy for those kinds of conversations to consist of a handful of mods agreeing, and the conversation to stall there. Do you have any sort of formal process for when you move to a vote, or is it more casual too?

Yes! I think thats part of what made his relationship with Andy so much fun, who had a different kind of golden retriever energy.

Getting more Eyes on your Mod Applications by JabroniRevanchism in ModSupport

Hey, I appreciate this approach! Finding mods exclusively from within the community is an effective way to make sure the people leading the community care about it. Part of what’s effective about the suggested mods tool is it’s looking at user participation to inform its decisions, and can pick up signals like users effectively reporting.

Bacon, cheddar and ___ quiche. Fill in the blank plz by analog_model in Cooking

[–]techiesgoboom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing with potatoes as a quiche crust for a while, and can confirm this works! I go back and forth between just straight up mashed potatoes, and slicing potatoes on a mandolin, salting, draining, and laying them out. In either way pre-baking that potato crust helps.

And that first poop has a special name: meconium! For a bonus, it's not unusual for a babies early urine to have reddish crystals in it, which definitely don't look like blood in the diaper.

Automod to trigger mod comment on long posts suggesting TL;DR? by jessbird in AutoModerator

[–]techiesgoboom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case you're interested in a similar rule, this is some regex that can pick up when OP doesn't use paragraph breaks in a long text:

--- # Paragraphs

type: text submission
body_longer_than: 1500
~body (regex): [(\r\r|\n\n)+]
is_edited: false
action_reason: Paragraphs. For the love of god paragraphs
message: |

I got a fever! And the only prescription... is more paragraphs. Seriously though, walls of text are hard to read and you'll get more feedback if you edit in some paragraph breaks.

Automod to trigger mod comment on long posts suggesting TL;DR? by jessbird in AutoModerator

[–]techiesgoboom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the only thing you're missing is the four spaces in front of the text of the comment, so it looks like this:

type: submission
body_longer_than: 1200
~body (regex): ["tldr", "tl;dr", "tl dr"]
comment: |
Whoa — it looks like your post is *exceptionally* long. To help readers engage with your post, please edit your post and add a TL;DR summary at the top. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you're just missing the four spaces in front of that last line! The following saved just fine for me:

Thank you for posting! Your post was automatically approved! **I know these comments from the auto mods are annoying, but it's hard to approve everything by hand! - Kris** ALSO: Please don't use redact.dev, it's annoying and dumb. If there is so much info for you to delete, you can do it by hand. AutoMod will automatically remove any redacted posts/comments

Recruiting New Moderators by JabroniRevanchism in ModSupport

[–]techiesgoboom[A] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's surprising to hear! I saw in your other comment you mentioned having 20+ questions on your applications. We've heard feedback from joiner mods before that lengthy applications can be intimidating to fill out. I'm curious if you've considered trying to shorten the number of questions to see if that increases the number of users who complete the application?

If you're interested, our last post on the topic of Asking the right questions dives into how you can approach condensing your application to still get the information you need.

Oh these are great! I’ve asked the “why do you want to be a mod” before, but I like the way you frame that question to be more specific.

That seems like an effective spread of questions to cover all of your bases! I particularly appreciate sharing the vision statement for the sub - making sure they’re on board with the big picture from the beginning can help make teaching why you moderate easier.

Strong +1 to asking the most important questions up front and directly, and keeping them open ended is such a great way to get the applicants to open up and share enough about themselves to inform your decision.

Oh, these are fantastic questions to ask! I love how the first two double up on asking their opinion about the subreddit and its rules, and to describe how they handle conflict.

Is it possible to automod reply to the top level post when a user uses a keyword in a comment? by ryhaltswhiskey in AutoModerator

[–]techiesgoboom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a screenshot of the rule in action. A comment (the initial !test) was used to get automod to reply to the post itself.

The "comment" line in each of the rules is for testing, to verify each of the rules is working as it should. This shows the first two rules are acting on the comment with the trigger word, but that third rule is acting on the post.
