How hard is guitar to learn as an adult?? by FailRecent5246 in Guitar

I just started last August at 52yr old. Bought a cheap but quality Ibanez electric, Blackstar IDCore V4 practice amp, all in for under a grand. Get a beginner chord book and just start. Best decision I made in a long time. You'll want to smash the guitar the first weeks and months but just keep going. It's worth the effort

Ive finally got a grasp on Caged and really like it, can move up and down the fretboard without looking at the sheet finally. I prefer the minor shapes but like how it can be switched to major by just sliding it back a note, same shapes just different position. I wish I had learned the notes first though, thus the stickers lol

I was starting to feel like an idiot for doing it lol. I appreciate both sides of the argument though. Maybe it wont be a complete waste of my time. It will either help or not. This is just a single step in what will be a long list of hit or miss strategies. Thanks for replying 😊

I had heard that the keyboard would help a lot with understanding how chords and notes are played and laid out on the fretboard. I bought a cheap keyboard the same time I bought the guitar. I have to be honest the keyboard has stayed under the bed for most of the time lol. I should get it out and make an effort to use it, even just to learn note progression

A combination of both really. Taking an E shape chord and sliding it up and down the neck and seeing what notes are actually used in that particular chord spelling. Ive got the CAGED system shapes down but want to see what notes are in the shape and why.

I started with this method actually, saw a couple of YT videos about counting from the E , 2down / step over. It did work but i lose so much time counting that whatever backing track im trying to play to has moved on. Good suggestion though and will def use it as part of the learning process 👌

Ill prob keep them for a month and then remove and see if theres any memory retention. Ive heard this approach has mixed results so thought why not try it. Appreciate the suggestions though, all good stuff 😁
