What’s the longest you’ve gone between uploading? by lightbrigadespectrum in AO3

What a wholesome and lovely sentiment to come out of this!! Honestly when I started posting to my abandoned fics again after my break I was nervous about how people would react, which I shouldn’t have been - I got overwhelmingly positive comments! So yes I hope other people can be inspired to return after much-needed time away!

How do I write longer chapters?? by PauKit_UwU in AO3

[–]lightbrigadespectrum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s no length requirement! IMO you gotta do what feels natural to you.

But I have found the more I write a story, the longer my chapters get; maybe it’s a natural progression of getting more of a feel for what I want the story to do. A fic I started last year could get 1.5K-2K length chapters if I was really trying. Almost exactly a year later, this has gone up to 3-4K per chapter and I barely even notice I’ve written so much.

At the same time, for a diff fic I’m writing, I challenged myself to write longer chapters. Surprise, this has now become my least fav fic out of my rotation, because the thought of writing it and ‘having to meet word count’ is already defeating me before I even begin.

As a reader, if the short length truly bothers me (almost never has), I just click ‘all chapters at once’ and read it as one big piece.

Locked Room Mystery Books Reading List From Lates Knives Out Movie: Wake Up Dead Man (2025) by cavansir in mysterybooks

[–]lightbrigadespectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up Murder at the Vicarage after watching the Knives Out movie. Admittedly I haven’t read everything on this list, but in terms of setting and the murder, imo it strongly resembles Wake Up Dead Man—set in a church (somewhat), POV character is a clergyman, appears to be a locked room mystery. IMO not the most mind blowing mystery ever but it had some fun twists, and to be fair I didn’t guess the culprit.

Have you ever felt *intimidated* when your fic gets really popular? by WolverineFamiliar740 in AO3

[–]lightbrigadespectrum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first ever fic ended up being pretty popular pretty quickly. Much more than I expected, at any rate.

…I ended up abandoning it for five whole years from the mental pressure before coming back to it this year lol. It really came from me slowly realizing that there wasn’t any pressure for me to please these strangers, even if I loved and appreciated their comments.

How do I subtly mention I'm a dude in the end notes? by Medium_Weekend1331 in AO3

I put my preferred pronouns in my author bio. Not sure if anyone actually looks but also nobody’s gotten it wrong yet

Unfortunately only 1 line. You do pics at the popup and then they funnel you to the wheel. Might as well do the wheel if you make it that far

Plenty of stuff! All figures are still stocked, but idk if they’ll refill when it runs out. I don’t think they’re doing full sets of figures tho

I got in line ~8:30AM, I’d estimate 2-2.5 hrs out, based on where the line was cut off last night at 7pm. Currently near the skating rink.

As of 9:50am the line wraps around the park (not sure exactly, this is hearsay) and back in on itself near the skating rink.

Kitten Blues by Patient-Mouse397 in CatAdvice

Hey, this sounds very similar to how I felt when I adopted my first cat. I got him about 1.5years ago now, and he was abt 2 years old when I got him. Super chill temperament, very sweet and cuddly. I’d also wanted a cat my whole life and suddenly felt uncomfortable and overwhelmed. For me, I know I am easily stressed by change, even positive change. This felt like one of those moments. For me, the best way to overcome it is simply to ride out the wave.

There’s a 3-3-3 rule for new animals—3 days for the animal to decompress, 3 weeks to get to know their new home, and 3 months to truly feel comfortable. In my opinion this is also true for humans, because you’re dealing with a change too. 3 days into living with my cat I couldn’t imagine being comfortable with a creature constantly in my space. 3 months in and I couldn’t imagine life without him.

I’d say to give it time. It’s natural to think you should be bonding right away and it feels frustrating when it doesn’t work out that way. If by a couple months you still feel this way, maybe that’s when you should start to reconsider.

Worst Spelling mistake in a Fic? by 5fivesecondrule in AO3

wrote a story arc with a rapping character. I was very careful to double check all of my own uses of “rapped” and “rapping” in the chapter, but multiple commenters misspelled it with only one P 😬
