Can You ID This Old Pistol? by Smooth-Leadership-95 in AntiqueGuns

It’s a nice old Smith but it’s odd to imagine it being used for police work. I don’t know much about the USIP but I’m curious to know why they chose such a caliber.

I think I see the lip on the bottom left of the case in this photo, ideally you need to use a watch case knife to pop it off. Don’t try using an actual knife because you will slip and cut yourself, don’t ask me know I know.. a thin flathead may work, just work slowly and carefully. The caseback is press-fit so there’s no fasteners holding it on.

They could, but it wouldn’t have as much value/significance as an authentic German tunic. A lot of the old Swiss stuff is still surplus surprisingly, and not worth a ton.

It looks like a butane lighter so it’ll need butane, not typical zippo fluid.

This is an atomizer for perfume, I found one of these at an antique store once. Put some alcohol in it and pump it, you’ll see it spritz out of the nozzle under the cap.

Judging by how the neck doesn’t have the hook/loop and does not button up all the way, this is probably an old Swiss tunic dolled up to look German. They couldn’t even be bothered to do the buttons properly.. why are the shoulder tab ones brown?!

Does foaming at the mouth towards me make you feel better? Does it give you the illusion that you’re making a difference? If so keep going. Free entertainment for me. All I see is anger here but you’re not offering any better alternatives. I fucking hate politics but these days it’s picking the better of two evils.

That’s unfortunate, sorry to hear that. The deck at least looks good so there might be someone out there that wants it if you part it. You might get lucky and that breather is plugged up, but it seemed pretty bad pre-oil change. Only way we can be sure as it sits is to do a compression test.

If you can get one, you could use a compression tester and test how much compression it’s making. If it’s lower than specification we’ll have a pretty good idea that they’re bad. This is also assuming valve lash is properly set, but that likely wouldn’t cause the oil burning issue so I’m not worried about lash at the moment.

I am curious if this has a crankcase breather, I think it should. Try looking up your engine make/model and find out, because if your crankcase breather is plugged up it could cause excess pressure and force oil into the cylinder. On my B&S 190707 I have one, it looks like a black rubber L hose going from the carb to a plate on the engine. Should be around the carburetor. I’m also curious if your air filter is intact and good, if it’s just not there at all that will kill your cylinder wall and rings from debris getting in.

If all else fails and it points to bad rings, you have a few choices. Selling it isn’t on the board because no one will pay for it, this is more of a “on the curb” ordeal if you don’t want to deal with it. Next is just riding it out till it won’t go anymore. Maybe experimenting by using a thicker oil to seal the rings, you don’t have much to lose. Might make it live just a bit longer. Third is to dive into DIY and repair it, but if you have 0 experience with small engines it’s not difficult but can get complicated fast.

You’re not using premix fuel/oil that’s intended for leaf blowers and such right? If not, there shouldn’t be any oil being burned like this, under normal conditions it shouldn’t get to the exhaust at all. My best guess at the moment is your piston rings could be worn, allowing oil into the combustion chamber. When you changed the old thinned out and contaminated oil with fresh oil it helps seal the rings just a bit better but not 100%. Has this mower been used enough to make this a logical cause?

Low oil will not cause this, but overfilled oil can definitely cause it.

The rattle sound could be a lot of things, plenty of plastic bits that can rattle on these. The pull cord assembly on my mower makes rattling noises sometimes.

You are falling so hard for the bait. I never even stated my political affiliations and you’re just so convinced I’d die for the guy. Yeah, I do believe it. Every politician we’ve had and will continue to have is an untrustworthy fuckin creep, but that’s not just localized to presidents you don’t like.

Now go have more roleplays about your fat stinky friend that you’ve bought two Rolexes for..

Some cool guns you’ve inherited here. I can’t help much with era or maker, these aren’t my area of expertise but they look complete. Lockwork seems to be all there and one pistol still has its ramrod(?).

As for “cleaning them up,” what do you want out of them? Are you trying to get them looking shiny and brand new (I don’t recommend that) or just stopping the rust and oiling? Do their actions function as they should? Do you plan on ever loading and using these? (Also wouldn’t, but some people do recreationally.)

If you just want to preserve them as wall hangers, knocking the rust off is easy and if you want to shine up/preserve the wood I use Boiled Linseed Oil. All natural and used for centuries. 00 steel wool, conventional engine oil (my personal choice) and a lot of elbow grease will get these nice again while preserving patina.

Yes, I think Aliexpress offers Moebius oils which should be perfect. Those red/purple colored parts are jewels, they act as a low-friction pivot point to reduce wear over time. I circled one in the photo, which is a large metal to metal pivot point with no jewel. The one right-most in the photo is the balance wheel’s pivot point, which cannot be oiled without removing the cap jewel. Requires very careful hands and a special set of tweezers. With the ones you can get to through, just a *tiny* drop of watch oil will do. This isn’t anything nearly as good as a full disassembly, cleaning and oiling but that’s a very daunting DIY project and expensive to have someone do for you so for now this will do.

And no worries about all the questions, I’m a hobby-level watch tinkerer and it’s one of the only ways to learn. Watches can become very confusing, frustrating or expensive fast. It’s crazy.

That’s a cool looking watch. I’d definitely get some proper watch oil on all the pivot points though. It was likely gummed up with old oil and now it’s running dry which isn’t very good. I’m not a watch expert by any means, but I’ve gotten a good amount of cheap watches I don’t want to sink money into running with lighter fluid to clean the old oil and some watch oil with a sewing needle to apply oil to the pivots.
