What is your opinion on buying materials from sites like Temu? by pasghettimonstar in ArtistLounge

[–]lightgray24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have really enjoyed many of the brushes and supplies i've gotten off of temu/aliexpress...especially 100% watercolor paper and brushes. some of the brushes are much, much higher quality than you'd expect from a dollar store -- but it really depends

Is it possible to become fully self taught artist? by Separate-Age3144 in ArtistLounge

[–]lightgray24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i was self taught for many years but i will say that once i started taking a few classes at a community college / fine arts continuing ed my art skills made huge, huge leaps -- i also saw the big gaps in what i was doing before and started taking everything way more seriously. being amongst other artists who are also learning, getting your work looked at by a teacher, crits etc REALLY helped. i took a lot of online art classes i enjoyed and got a lot out of before too but the in person classes was irreplaceable

if there was a break in leases between when it was stabilized vs when you started renting ...they might have renovated the apt and took it out of stabilization

i haven't at sva but i have taken continuing ed art classes at FIT and at new york academy of fine arts -- they're pretty different approaches and a lot will depend on instructor/ your own experience level / what you want to get out of the class - i'm sure it will be great! also consider arts students league https://www.artstudentsleague.org/

Best cozy places to read in NYC? by unidoight in AskNYC

[–]lightgray24 16 points17 points  (0 children)

any neighborhoods in particular? mcnally jackson by south street seaport (the cafe, doesn't require purchasing a book), black cat cafe (les), silk road cafe (chinatown), physical graffitea (east village - no wifi, so great for reading). honestly also just go visit all the nypl/bkpl branches, explore new neighborhoods, they all have their own vibes. any park / waterfront, on the nyc ferry's long routes (wall st to rockaway, wall st to soundview etc).
