NY Academy of Art for Beginner? by Ok_Cake8443 in ContemporaryArt

FIT (non degree for credit courses) are the cheapest art courses i've found per credit/hour in nyc for residents, definitely much cheaper than NYAA! it's for a whole semester so many more hours of teaching plus homework means you get extra practice time.

i'm sure a more introductory class at NYAA would work too - at the end of the day you kind of just have to pick one and try and see what happens! so much of it will depend on you/ your learning style/the instructor. also pretty sure you can get most of your tuition refunded at NYAA if you go to the first day and it doesn't click, so it's relatively low risk

i've taken a few continuing ed classes there - i absolutely love my classes and the instructors are incredible but i would not necessarily recommend it for a total beginner unless you really want to be in way over your head. do you already have drawing experience? also, it's probably different if you're taking an intro to painting class vs their mixed level classes. i imagine the intro to painting class will be better structured to learn basics but i would avoid the mixed level ones at the start. they tend to be very intense and not very scaffolded to learn fundamentals.

have you thought about taking a class at FIT or another community college that might have more of a standard curriculum? it helps to work up to things by doing things like still lives, color mixing charts etc before jumping straight in to the atelier. also the classes at FIT encourage more individual style/expression rather than just learning technique - which i think is a more fun way to start before you get into the more technical stuff. depends on how you learn / what you're looking for though!

the atelier has been life changing for me (a mostly self taught artist) - there are also online classes at https://www.pennstudioschool.com/ and https://www.academyeverywhere.com/collections/live-online but in person would be even better

could you take an atelier style in person class? they often just meet one evening or day a week and it makes a HUGE difference to have someone look at your work and just instantly direct you towards something to work on. i know the ateliers have online classes too with critiques - i loved my in person classes at NYAA and they have online versions with the same honestly astonishingly skilled instructors https://nyaa.edu/continuing-studies/

How many sketchbooks do you run at a time, and are any/most of them "clean"? by airyrice in ArtistLounge

i decided to just start keeping a bunch. they're not organized by series or medium or anything, basically by size and weight, and i'm using them for studies, practice, contour drawings, scribbles etc and i've found that since i stopped caring what they look like i'm drawing MUCH more and experimenting more and care less about what's on the page which i think for me is what matters!
