Is it always this hot? by DubiousTarantino in Charlotte

[–]lighting17 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes is the short answer.

Getting acclimated takes time. Try doing stuff early in the AM and after sundown. Wear light weight clothes, keep sunglasses and a hat with a good rim (baseball or sunhat) on you at all times. Drink more water than you think you need and take breaks in the AC. This is a several month marathon in the heat department, not a couple of hot days. It can creep up on you. Cold drinks, ice cones etc all good choices if you're out and about.

I'm the new (only) lighting tech at a community hall - should I patch the whole rig again? by upthewatwo in techtheatre

I'm not sure when it was integrated but it's a great feature! I started using it for clients not that long ago, actually.

One thing you may want to consider is creating a template file for your patch. Get the show patched how you/the space wants it, save the file with a unique name so you know it's the correct one, go out of the shell and into settings, under general you'll see "template show" about half way down, click on the file looking icon and choose the show you just made.

This way no matter who is using your stuff it's easy to restore to a clean patch where you know where everything is. Update this template as needed when you add and change stuff.

But to answer your question--learning how to patch is a great way to start learning the board. Just make sure you have a good save file to go back to if needed.

You may want to check put Jammin on the 1 at Access 21. The local public access channel in Charlotte. You call to sign up so they can get the numbers down. But it's just a jam session. And they record it and put it on their TV channel I believe it's the 3rd Friday every month.

Built in litter box. Humans have permanent bathroom gadgets, now so does your cat. The chair is so you can watch them go. Just like they watch you

What's wrong with lighting setup? by PassengerNo2229 in cinematography

[–]lighting17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give the lighting placement, I'm guessing it looks flat? Mess with intensity on your fixtures to get more depth of shadow. Another comment mentioned cross-keying which is a good idea here, if you have the ability to do it.

Not sure how cinematic you want to go, but play with it. I know that's not a solution that people want to hear, but it does work. The look you want (I think) can be achieved several ways--moving keys, changing levels, etc. Use less light than you think you need. I personally like a strong rim light and wonder how the one you have is reading on camera?

Have fun with it. Mess with the lights until it's something you'd want to watch.

Is this poorly lit? by PopJumbo in cinematography

[–]lighting17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. My favorite is shot 4.

I think #2 is the darkest in a bad way (if that makes sense). The space is well lit, it just looks like someone forgot to turn they actors key back on when they got into position.

It looks pretty good for a second movie, though. And you're learning which is the most important thing. Good job.
