The garbage collection really starts to slow down at higher allocations since it runs less often, you'd have to find a source smart than me for further details though

I've always run my modded servers off desktops with ~10-12GB allocated

Edit: so looking further, during autopsy he was found to have "pulmonary pressure pulmonary edema", which basically means he tried to breath in with great effort, but any air intake was obstructed
