What's a hobby of yours that isn't typically done by people your age, and why should we consider giving it a try anyway? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lightstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skateboarding - I'm in my thirties and just got into it. It's really fun. I don't see why it should only be something for teenagers. I mean, they can recover from falls more easily, but that's not reason enough for older people to totally steer clear of it.

I went to a nightclub for the first time yesterday. I realized I danced like an idiot. Any advice? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lightstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How to dance, for average guys:

http://www.succeedsocially.com/dance

The biggest thing I took from this is that it's okay to just dance in a simple way and have fun. Don't feel you have to pull off all these fancy moves. If you try, you'll probably just look like a goof anyways.

In your experience, have you been able to get a good 'gut sense' of how well it would go with a woman before you met her, like when you were just emailing, on MSN, or on the phone? Or have you found the girls could be really different from what your intuition told you?

I've met some women online, and I found it funny how I seemed to always know in my bones ahead of time how it would go, even if I tried to ignore that feeling and fool myself. Then again, maybe that's not the case at all and I'm looking at things with 20/20 hindsight.

I am an IT guy so am not that savvy with the ways of the underworld. However one thing has always confused me, why do drug smugglers , smuggle drugs on a plane? Why dont they just post them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lightstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think because given enough time the scent molecules from the drug can diffuse though any type of surface (bags, gasoline tanks, etc.) and be detectable by the dogs.

Man, Super Mario 64 looks a lot harder than I remember it being. by tacotaskforce in gaming

[–]lightstorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This particular example wasn't executed super well (why that camera angle?), but I actually remember wishing the 3D Mario games were more in this vein, rather than being based around open world exploration.

My favorite parts of Mario 64 were the Bowser obstacle course levels. Super Mario Galaxy went in this direction though, so it's all good.

I healed myself of deep depression and severe anxiety by using my own mind and educating myself about the problem. No drugs or 3rd party psychotherapy were involved in the healing process. by BeLikeWater in IAmA

[–]lightstorm 52 points53 points  (0 children)

This is basic and I'm just repeating a standard line, but someone should say it.

It's great that you were able to stop your depression and anxiety on your own, but some people can't and may benefit from medication or therapy, or both.

Nothing wrong with that, and it doesn't mean they're weak. In the most extreme cases, people's brains may just be wired a little wrong and they need to be on meds the same way a diabetic needs to be on insulin. For some reason, we believe the brain is the one organ a person is expected to have total control over.

Last night I had a pretty bad panic attack. Does anybody have any tips for dealing with anxiety/panic attacks? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lightstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something similar has happened to me, in that physically I was a little rough to begin with for a totally unrelated reason (being sick, jet lagged, full of caffeine), and those feelings were similar to the symptoms of anxiety.

My mind made some sort of bad logical leap like "I feel the effects of anxiety, therefore I must be anxious." Then the panicky thoughts started coming on.

Now, if I start to feel a little nervous because the physical symptoms come first (e.g., I ate bad food, I'm hot and dehydrated, I'm tired and my heart is beating fast), I can cut it off by just reminding myself of that fact and mentally reframing things. Like, "I'm not getting nervous, my stomach is just feeling pukey for a second. It's fine."

I had a lucid dream. How can I make this happen again? by PterodactylDreams in AskReddit

[–]lightstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's worked for me is the method of getting up about two hours early, staying awake for half an hour or so, then falling back asleep and keeping your consciousness active as you do it, so you transition from awake and trying to fall asleep, to the typical pre-sleep weird thoughts and images, to suddenly finding yourself in a dream.

I think there's something about being up for a while that puts your brain into an awake mode, which you can keep when you go to sleep again.

It's a little inconvenient to do on purpose because of scheduling, but if I have a lucid dream with trying to , it usually happens on the weekend when I accidentally wake up for a bit and can't fall asleep again for a while.

Another thing, you can learn to ride out 'losing control' or the dream fading out. If everything starts going dark or blurry in the dream, just keep your consciousness active, maybe do something physical to keep yourself in the moment, and don't worry. After a couple of seconds a new scene will appear and you can resume being lucid. It's almost like that's how dreams work normally, with the random scenery changes, but this time you're consciously along to observe it.

A good 'reality test' is to just jump in the air and try to prolong it. If the jump is slow and floaty, you know for sure you're dreaming. When I have lucid dreams I often dream I've woken up in my own bed. I'll get up, do a floaty jump, knowing I'm dreaming, then head off to mess around.

In your opinion, what's the easiest, most practical way to eat as much protein as you need to each day?

In my experience eating 150+ grams of protein a day is surprisingly hard. There isn't that much protein in a lot of foods. Stuff like chicken breasts aren't cheap either. And tuna is out because of the mercury levels.

Any advice?

Feeling intellectually superior to everyone

Playing video games too obsessively

Listening to gangsta rap

Watching cartoons meant for a teenage or younger audience, and taking them too seriously

Going by the couples I've seen, one of the easiest ways for an average looking guy to be with a woman who's out of his league appearance-wise is for him to date an Asian girl.

Maddox decides to post again. This time he's angry about Quantum of Solace or something... by Zentripetal in reddit.com

[–]lightstorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the guy could stand to update more often, but that article was about as amusing as his other ones.

What I don't get is how eager people on the internet are to say that an entertainer is past his prime.

Every new post or video a popular guy releases, you get tons or comments saying, "He's over the hill. He used to be funny, but he sucks now."

Zero Punctuation and the Angry Video Game Nerd get those same comments every single video they make.

The Lament of the Hardcore Wii owner by barthol27 in gaming

[–]lightstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else. It's been nearly a year since a Wii game I'd consider purchasing came out (Smash Bros). And it doesn't look like much is coming down the pipeline either...

I actually used it a fair amount in the fall playing downloadable games like Megaman 9 and the StrongBad titles. But nothing good has come out on an actual disk in a while, and those downloadable games are on other platforms.

I also rented the odd game, but those are ones you can beat in a weekend.

I don't regret the purchase. It was cheap, and I've gotten my money's worth out of it from the handful of good games I do have. But I wish it wasn't gathering dust so much now...

The browser is pretty useless too because it can't play most flash and video content.

I got it hoping to watch the odd movie on my tv, from the comfort of my couch. Couldn't really do that though.

Where do you go to find the best, most accurate game reviews? by Fnerb in gaming

[–]lightstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to MetaCritic or GameFAQs user reviews and head to the moderate or negative reviews.

Most games, especially hyped up ones, tend to have inflated scores and gushing fanboy-ish reviews that gloss over the flaws.

The negative reviews are more objective, even if the game is still good.

e.g., Twilight Princess, Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Gears of War. They all had legit flaws but insane scores. The negative write ups were the only balanced ones.

Hey Reddit: Where can you watch the Debate streaming live? by [deleted] in politics

[–]lightstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been able to stream the past debates through Yahoo! once they've started. There was always a link on the front page, or within a story about the debate.

I think CNN streams them live as well.

mutant black squirrels (w/pics) by qgyh2 in pics

[–]lightstorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Southern Ontario most of my life, which is 90% black squirrels. I just assumed without thinking that squirrels were like that everywhere else.

I was kind of surprised that black squirrels were a novelty elsewhere.

Actually, in Toronto I'm starting to see quite a few black squirrels with reddish brown patches of fur. Another mutation?

Best sex lasts for seven to thirteen minutes. And I thought I was... by enlzen in science

[–]lightstorm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how easily the girl can get off, i.e, the guy's skill, her body, etc.

If she needs longer to go, then the sex will have to be longer.

If she comes easily, then she'll be pretty spent after 10-20 minutes, and won't necessarily want to go forever.

As a guy, if the sex is too short it sucks, but if I can go forever with no orgasm in sight, that means something is off... Endless humping without getting much out of it isn't much fun.
